Carpet - Secret Box (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Carpet - Secret Box (IMPORT) (CD)

The 2017 full-length by the German band that sounds like John Lennon fronting Adrian Belew-era King Crimson, meandering into Floydian ambience offset by fuzzy heavy rock guitar work.

Night Viper - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Night Viper - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD)

Night Viper is a hot-rockin' heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The first two ingredients in the Viper pie were Sofie Lee Johansson and Tom Sutton (Horisont, The Order Of Israfel, ex-Church Of Misery). As soon as they met, the chemistry started flying and some pure fist-banging heavy metal demos were thrown down. They were joined briefly by Sven Nilsson from Antichrist on drums as well as a few others on guitar and bass, but it was once swing master Jonna Karlsson was behind the kit that things really started rolling.

Lecherous Gaze - One Fifteen (CD) Cover Art Lecherous Gaze - One Fifteen (CD)

California's Lecherous Gaze plays, in the band's own words, "Psycho-delic shred-tastic ultra-hyphened rock-punk heavy jams." 'One Fifteen', The Gaze's third full-length, showcases these hyper-talented musicians at the peak of their powers. The band spits no-bullshit, old-school, mean and greasy proto-punk straight into your face.

Death Alley - Live at Roadburn (CD) Cover Art Death Alley - Live at Roadburn (CD)

It should come as no surprise that playing Roadburn is a very special honor, but in the case of Death Alley, playing there for a second time in 2016 formed a landmark in the band's history. Two years earlier, Death Alley experienced their actual birth, after the seeds for what the band would become were planted in Guy Tavares's dungeon in the preceding winter. Opening Roadburn 2014 in the Cul de Sac was where they played the repertoire leading to Black Magick Boogieland for the very first time. Now, after two turbulent years of arousing rockers all throughout Europe and the US, the band took Roadburn 2016 as the opportunity to show how there is not just one version of Death Alley. Forces are joined with guitar heroes from a close personal circle, with Oeds' The Devil's Blood years bringing Ron van Herpen to the stage, and Mühr consolidating Dennis' bond with Jevin de Groot. In this formation, Death Alley6 indulges in the drawn-out side of its musical spectrum. The record presents a rousing version of Selim Lemouchi's Œ'It's On' tributary to an ever-inspiring force. The instrumental 666666 that builds on the existing musical ties between the Death Alley6 flows into the new Feeding the Lions a first taste of Death Alley¹s next chapter. The sense that Death Alley exists in multiple forms is ultimately rendered in the 22-minute version of ŒSupernatural Predator. Considering the history and theme of this song, there could have hardly been a more overpowering site than playing it in this formation at the quintessential Roadburn festival.

Soggy - Self Titled (Re-issue) (CD) Cover Art Soggy - Self Titled (Re-issue) (CD)

French band Soggy started back in 1978, playing covers of Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, MC5 and The Stooges. However, the members soon started writing their own material, blending elements of hard rock with punk, which led to the 'Waiting For The War' 7-inch, dating from 1981. After more than 100 concerts the band split in July of 1982. Nevertheless, Soggy's cult status has only grown over the past years. In 2008 a collection of the band's recordings was released by the French label Memoire Neuve. It sold out quickly, so this new version is most welcome.

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors (CD) Cover Art Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors (CD)

Blaak Heat is a Parisian-American avant-garde psych-rock trio. Previously known as 'Blaak Heat Shujaa', the band has become more primal and more indigenous. Also notable is that the Eastern influence is expanded by incoorperating more traditional instruments and due to the contributions from percussionist Nelson Bragg (The Brian Wilson Group). The result is a timeless, vivid blend of thundering psychedelic rock and Arabian tonalities, an altar to heavy riffage, mind expansion and social insurgencies.

Psychedelic Witchcraft - The Vision (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Psychedelic Witchcraft - The Vision (IMPORT) (CD)

Italian cult rock outfit Psychedelic Witchcraft have proven somewhat difficult to keep up with over the last year-plus. As they’ve hooked up with Soulseller Records and reissued their Black Magic Man EP (review here), their full-length debut, The Vision, and already announced a follow-up compilation in 2017’s Magick Rites and Spells, the band consistently work to feature the vocals of Virginia Monti (also Dead Witches) amid semi-retro ‘70s-style boogie, as heard on the debut in cuts like “Witches Arise” and “Wicked Ways.” At nine tracks/34 minutes, however, The Vision is deceptively efficient, and though they’re unquestionably playing to style, Psychedelic Witchcraft find room to vary moods on “The Night” and the subdued strum of “The Only One Who Knows,” keeping some sonic diversity while staying largely on-theme lyrically. To call the album cohesive is underselling its purposefulness, but the question is how the band will build on the bluesy soulfulness of “Magic Hour Blues” now that they’ve set this progression in motion. Doesn’t seem like it will be all that long before we find out.

Psychedelic Witchcraft - Magick Rites and Spells (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Psychedelic Witchcraft - Magick Rites and Spells (IMPORT) (CD)

Following last year’s debut album “The Vision”, Italian occult-doom-rockers Psychedelic Witchcraft now return with “Magick Rites and Spells”, which will be released via Soulseller Records on 27th January 2017. The first part of “Magick Rites and Spells” offers new and exclusive tracks that were not included on the debut though had an important meaning to the band, while the second part features the band’s first EP that blends perfectly with the first half concerning sounds, atmosphere and magick.

Monkey3 - Beyond the Black Sky (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Monkey3 - Beyond the Black Sky (IMPORT) (CD)

Marking a decade of existence in 2011 after one of their most successful years yet – 2010 found them appearing at both Roadburn and Hellfest – Swiss psychedelonauts Monkey3 follow-up 2009’s covers EP, Undercover, with their third full-length, Beyond the Black Sky. Released via Stickman Records with art by Malleus, the eight-track LP runs just over 42 minutes, and on it, the four-piece Lausanne band delves into a range of atmospheres, keeping their instrumental songs memorable and grounded with a foundation of heavy riffs. The vibe is vaguely stoner, but there’s more going on with Monkey3 (either written thusly or Monkey 3 with a space between the name and number; I’ve seen it both ways) than simple riff-driven instrumentality, and where an act like Karma to Burn has clearly had some influence, Beyond the Black Sky pulls from synth-inclusive space rock and heavy jamming, resulting in a feel generally more atmospheric, as they show in the low underlying rumble of the short “Tuco the Ugly.” These are songs, and they’re accessible on that level, but each piece also has a character of its own and a progression playing out.
