Baby Woodrose - Freedom (Red) (LP) Cover Art Baby Woodrose - Freedom (Red) (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition on red colored vinyl.

The 2016 full-length from the Danish garage-psych power house. All Baby Woodrose albums have a different vibe and this time there has been an analogue approach to recording the nine songs. The whole album is recorded and mixed on tape, givng it a very rockband live-in-the-studio type of feel. This means no cut and paste and a minimal amount of overdubs.

Baby Woodrose - Kicking Ass and Taking Names (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Baby Woodrose - Kicking Ass and Taking Names (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition on black vinyl.

The tracks contained on this compilation represent the outskirts of the Baby Woodrose universe, from weird cover versions like '6654321' by The Troggs to 2 minute punk outbursts like 'A Good Day To Die', but what they all have in common is the uncommitted energy and instant excitement of an adrenaline kick. Some of them were created on the spot in the studio (Live Wire comes to mind) and others were meant as album tracks, but ended up as outtakes for one reason or another. They have been recorded over a number of years, in different studios and by different band lineups, mixed at different stages by different people and released by different labels from all over the world, so the sound might vary slightly, but they also represent a unique archival history of the band, compiled here for the first time. An excellent collection of rare B-sides 2001-2013.

Beast in the Field - The Sacred Above the Sacred Below (Green) (2LP) Cover Art Beast in the Field - The Sacred Above the Sacred Below (Green) (2LP)

Limited edition on green vinyl! Deluxe gatefold sleeve! Includes a poster and stickers!

The Sacred Above, the Sacred Below continues Beast in the Field‘s aural dominance in a manner so astoundingly fucking heavy that whatever ideas they want to put to it, I’m on board. Specifically this time, the artwork and song titles like, “Great Watcher of the Sky,” “Wakan Tanka” and “The Great Spirit of Light” abound with a Native American sensibility, as only the briefest moments of respite peak through the duo’s onslaught. Seriously, Jahr‘s snare drum is heavier sounding than most bands, and whether it’s on a shorter track like “Wakan Tanka” or the propulsive subsequent basher “There Once Were Mountains of Ice,” Beast in the Field retain their brutal sensibility all the way to and through the album apex of “Oncoming Avalanche”.

Beehoover - Concrete Catalyst (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Beehoover - Concrete Catalyst (IMPORT) (LP)

What comes out of the speakers deserves only one description: M.O.N.S.T.R.O.U.S! In every possible way. Monstrous sound, monstrous songwriting, monstrous class! In 2010, Beehoover push their ridiculously powerful vehicle in a different direction without losing grip. It is still there - thee Beehoover sound that makes this band so special. Bass and drums, nothing else and a tone that no one else has. The capture and release rhythms, the call and response between the two members and good gawwwd, those riffs! Tons of 'em!

While the predecessor "Heavy Zooo" was a hook-ladden, angst-filled soundtrack to riot, rampage and party, "Concrete Catalyst" now sees the band elaborating their songwriting into unexpected finesse. Touching prog-ladden textures and unexpected changes, creating distinct walls of sound and incorporating structures that make them leaving the heavy rock cluster at ease, "Concrete Catalyst" is a monolith that is so much more than a collection of songs. If there ever was a reason for using the word "album" in conjunction with a long-play record it would be records like this one! Narrative and conceptual composition that is here. The whole album presents itself in a colorful dignity that leaves you breathless. While it's obvious that Beehoover seem to take their integral parts much more serious than ever before, their special and distinct humor still shines on "Concrete Catalyst". There simply is no category where you can lump this in.

Beelzefuzz - Self Titled (Black) (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Beelzefuzz - Self Titled (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition on black vinyl! High quality deluxe gatefold packaging. Comes with a super-huge totally-awesome poster of the spectacular album cover artwork!

The trio of guitarist/vocalist Dana Ortt, bassist Pug Kirby and drummer Darin McCloskey (the latter also of Pale Divine) have quickly hit on an individual approach, rooted in a deeply melodic, progressive wizard doom that’s brought to life on stage through live double-tracking of Ortt‘s vocals and a range of effects that show up on the album as well, from the dense classic-heavy fuzz of Kirby‘s bass to compression on the singing and some manner of alchemy in the guitar that turns it into a Hammond organ. All of this enriches and deepens the atmosphere live as well as on Beelzefuzz‘s self-titled debut full-length and quickly into the album, it becomes clear that Beelzefuzz are offering something different from the standard post-The Obsessed/Pentagram riff-and-chug of Maryland doom.

Certainly those elements are there, but whether it’s the gallop that begins the album with opener and highlight “Reborn” or the more stoner shuffle that drives “Sirens Song,” Beelzefuzz present their material in such a way as to create an aesthetic of their own from these familiar parts. Across an eight-track span, the band casts a richly melodic ambience that’s somewhat thicker tonally than they have been live in my experience, but recorded largely by the venerable Chris Koslowski, it still represents the quirk in their turns and the breadth of their influence well, Ortt emerging as a frontman presence even without the benefit of the widened eyes with which he often regards his audience from the stage. There are flashes of complex brilliance, as “Hypnotize” and “Lonely Creatures” can attest, and even in the shorter, more straightforward pieces like “Lotus Jam” and “Sirens Song,” Beelzefuzz don’t sound quite like anyone or anything else out there. Silly name or not they’re something special.

Been Obscene - Night O'Mine (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Been Obscene - Night O'Mine (IMPORT) (LP)

Deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Been Obscene has shown an impressive amount of development – the instrumentalization has moved up a few notches at once, the drumming has taken a flying leap forward and the psychedelic and post-rock pastures are spread more evenly and enhances the flavor quite a bit. The album is much more vocal-driven than the previous one, but that doesn’t mean the instrumental passages have lessened. In fact, the instrumental passages have, if anything, grown more complex, with at least two instances of multi-layered, psychedelic pastures being explored in what are otherwise pretty straightforward songs. This provides the record with enough dynamism to engage you, but keeps it from going places that will lose you on the way – and, might I add, the atmosphere built is a lot darker and more brooding than you’d expect, and it comes off as a great big plus.
