Cathedral - Supernatural Birth Machine (CD)

Cathedral is one of the most respected doom bands working today and with good reason. For years, they've consistently produced good, heavy, thick music that gets under your skin (as well as other places). Their sound is identifiable in a second. One note from Gaz Jennings' guitar and you know it's them. Lee Dorrian's vocals remain some of the most distinctive of the breed. So it's no surprise that Supernatural Birth Machine is good stuff, even if it's a bit familiar. The album falls in the same vein as The Carnival Bizarre. That's not a complaint. The Carnival Bizarre remains one of their best albums and Supernatural Birth Machine is up there with it.

Cathedral's lyrics have never been expected to stand on their own as poetry - rather, they've always complemented the mood of the music perfectly and in that regard they've succeeded here, too. I particularly liked "Urko's Conquest," a thinly veiled retelling of Planet of the Apes. It's a good example of how good Cathedral is at setting a mood and building on it. If you've never heard Cathedral before, frankly, I'd start with The Carnival Bizarre. But you're going to get hooked on them and you'll move quickly on to this album. It's good fun.

I see this as one of those classic albums! Cathedral´s debut Forest of Equilibrium is a funeral doom classic. With their second album The Ethereal Mirror they found groove and after that things weren´t so grave, at least not until Endtyme. The music and excellent lyrics go hand in hand, so a lot of things happen in the songs. You can find some of Cathedral´s best compositions on this one. The music is simply timeless. Cathedral just took doom and mixed their own stuff into it and it must be the best thing since Black Sabbath. If Ozzy is a madman, then Lee Dorrian is a total lunatic!

Incoming Cerebral Overdrive - Controverso (IMPORT) (CD)

It's a powerful overcharging state, originating from the mastodontic approach to the riff rooted in a hardcore attitude and developing in something different and multiform. The furious dynamics, the tearing vocals, the seventies Italian prog reminiscences and the psychedelic aesthetic show the will to experiment on continuosly mutating song structures. Controverso represents a new impulse of uncontrollable nature: structured in eight tracks, the album evolves through a conscious musical growing, moving toward the innovative soul of avant garde music. Powerful concrete dynamics, tearing vocals and a mastodontic approach to the riff are the main directions of this "post-something" band from Italy.

Incoming Cerebral Overdrive - Le Stelle: A Voyage Adrift (IMPORT) (CD)

The concept, an imaginary, dark and lonely trip adrift discovered in a diary. Emotions of fear, anger and irrational excitement are expressed, waiting for a certain epilogue into desolation, a final annihilation in a cosmic fusion. Sonically, this new album is a journey that intersects and expands in a huge, deep and at times, claustrophobic monolith. Heavy cavernous guitars with back-breaking riffs, multifaceted, effect laden vocals and rhythmic notes plunge into a psychedelic mix of unpredictable sounds of distress and madness that we, the recipient, can only succumb to.

Morkobot - Morbo (IMPORT) (CD)

2011 marks the return of Morkobot, bringing forth their heaviest, most focused and most adventurous music ever. Enter, Morbo. After the previous one track album Morto, Morbo (latin for disease) consists of seven cacophonous songs in which the psychedelic attitude of the first Trilogy (Morkobot - Mostro - Morto albums) is dried to expose the bones and nerves of a more intricate, but at the same time more straightforward and focused music, skillfully assembled by the two bass guitars and drum kit. The result is a raw yet complex low end sound, interesting to hear as the spectrum of it becomes pure and essential so that Morbo will modify quickly the way you're used to hear music. Known for carving a sonic language of their own, Morkobot's fourth album takes their sound to new depths and offers a different way of approaching heavy music.

Morkobot - Morto (IMPORT) (CD)

Lin, Lan and Len have been at the mushrooms again. This is a sonically stout and viciously noxious offering from the experimental Italian three piece that throbs and buzzes like a huge malevolent alien brain trapped in a fluid filled tank. 'Morto' is one forty minute concept track created by two bassists and one drummer, and split into three hefty parts. Part one takes off suddenly in a shower of molten metal then slows to a rumble. The rumble builds gradually like an electrical storm fizzing and humming, at times gaps appear where the staccato angularity of the bass and drums are exposed like ribs on a rotting carcass. Part one ends in eerie near-quiet, evocative of some dead landscape on a far flung world.

Part two thrusts in like an interstellar dreadnought, all fat and gnarled bass lines and drums smacked hard and crisp. Furious cosmic sludge funk ensues; the interplay between the gurgling basses and the frenetic polyrhythmic drums sounds like the mighty Meshuggah in a dark spaced out mood. The final part of 'Morto' is part math rock, part giant irritated wheezing cyber-locust. Bizarre techno-convulsive noises like the dying throes of a moon sized super computer screech out of the speakers. The album doesn't rise to a final climax but instead breaks down to a sustained and shimmering wash of unsettling extraterrestrial electronica.

As testament to their skill and vision, Morkobot could easily lapse into post rock experimental cliché but never do, instead they navigate the listener through a nightmare future of insane technology and cold technocratic dystopia, running through a bewildering and combustive stew of instrumental styles like some mad cybernetic Frankenstein made from bits of Miles Davis, Lemmy and Stephen Hawking. Hold that concept.

Morkobot - Mostro (Deluxe Edition) (IMPORT) (CD)

Limited edition of only 500 handnumbered copies! Absolutely beautiful handmade silkscreened packaging by Malleus!!!! This is not just a CD, it is a highly detailed handmade work of art!

Morkobot is a totally suggestive instrumental space-psych sonic monster. A magmatic and liquid atmosphere lead the listener to a psychedelic and chaotic world in which vibrations become dense like glue, light and darkness are continuosly turning in a nonstop changing lysergic noise: moments of raw power suddenly replace those with softer, deliberate arrangements, and viceversa. From John Zorn to Black Sabbath, from Pink Foyd to Primus, from Godflesh to Hawkwind... past and present seem to be messed up in the magic pot of souls called Morkobot!

If you've done your homework, you'll notice that Supernatural Cat Records is also the home of Ufomammut. So it's not surprising that Morkobot treads a similar intergalactic path of transfixing soundscapes. But while Ufomammut predominantly revels in dark, heavily distorted psychedelic doom that's clouded in electronic ambiance, Morkobot takes a subtler, more overtly ethereal approach. At first Mostro sounds like electronic-based hard rock with slight flourishes, but as the six-song album progresses, the band lets their sound descend into darker territories. Morkobot has created some seriously trippy music with Mostro.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
