Across Tundras - Western Sky Ride (CD) Cover Art Across Tundras - Western Sky Ride (CD)

If you play that Neurosis/Isis strain of music, how are you going to set yourself apart from the likes of Tides, Mouth of the Architect, Souvenir's Young America, Angel Eyes, Disappearer, and all the other groups that have tread the same narrow path this year? If you're Denver's Across Tundras, you embrace your inner shitkicker and bury the vocals low in the mix. Acorss Tundras' sprawling compositions have more of a rock feel. It's as if they're playing something that, if sped up, could actually boogie. There's also a twangy aftertaste, a hint of alt-country. That could draw comparisons to Earth's Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, but Across Tundras isn't that ethereal and sparse. They're melancholy yet forward moving, and overall they live up to their billing of unleashing a "powerful new statement of rustic, crushing Americana."

Can't avoid the Isis comparisons but these guys do stray from the rigid mold. Songs are sprawling and the playing is really loose but stays heavy.

Beast in the Field - Lucifer, Bearer of Light (CD) Cover Art Beast in the Field - Lucifer, Bearer of Light (CD)

Exponential evil and sickening terror prevail on Beast In The Field's fourth album. 'Lucifer...' takes the foundation of riffs laid down on their last record, builds them up, and then turns them into dust. This is the soundtrack to destruction and decay, a 40 minute homage to the disintegrating world that will one day consume itself. Recorded onto two inch analog tape, it's brand new and yet ancient as the hills.

Beast in the Field - The Sacred Above the Sacred Below (CD) Cover Art Beast in the Field - The Sacred Above the Sacred Below (CD)

The Sacred Above, the Sacred Below continues Beast in the Field‘s aural dominance in a manner so astoundingly fucking heavy that whatever ideas they want to put to it, I’m on board. Specifically this time, the artwork and song titles like, “Great Watcher of the Sky,” “Wakan Tanka” and “The Great Spirit of Light” abound with a Native American sensibility, as only the briefest moments of respite peak through the duo’s onslaught. Seriously, Jahr‘s snare drum is heavier sounding than most bands, and whether it’s on a shorter track like “Wakan Tanka” or the propulsive subsequent basher “There Once Were Mountains of Ice,” Beast in the Field retain their brutal sensibility all the way to and through the album apex of “Oncoming Avalanche”.

Empires/Hellas Mounds - Split CD (CD) Cover Art Empires/Hellas Mounds - Split CD (CD)

An exhilarating display of east-meets-west/north-meets-south Minnesota's Empires and Arizona's Hellas Mounds join together to form one massive unforgetable chunk of majestic instru-metal. While Empires continue to showcase the barren, frozen wastelands of the midwest; the Hellas Mounds' debut delivers one giant slab of dense, arid doom that is as expansive as the desert that surrounds them.

Incisor - Trendshitter (CD EP) Cover Art Incisor - Trendshitter (CD EP)

Take the depth and precision of your favorite black/dark metal band and add even more technicality and subtract all the lame vocal lines and you’ll have Incisor. Trendshitter is a very moving album that shows sheer technical skill like few albums to date. The band proves again and again that vocals are not as necessary as society leads us to believe and then drills that idea into our head for a lasting amount of time.

An unholy riff-a-thon of instrumental death and thrash metal hot enough to melt the ink off of any Slayer T-shirt. For fans of Carcass, Testament, and The Fucking Champs.

Nain Rouge, The - The Self Defeatist (CD) Cover Art Nain Rouge, The - The Self Defeatist (CD)

Resurrecting and perfecting a sound that came and went with bands like Botch, Coalesce, and Deadguy, combined with the technicality and heaviness of early Mastodon, the atmospherics of Isis, and the grittiness that comes from living and playing in Detroit, the Nain Rouge are the very definition of heavy music. Drop-B tuning adds a layer of heaviness that most bands can’t match, added to a surprising ability to bring melody to their brand of mathematical chaos. Explosive off-time rhythms, dynamic syncopation, and the most guttural dual vocals you’ll ever encounter put the Nain Rouge in a class of heaviness all their own.

Something to be aware of...
By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
