Across Tundras - Western Sky Ride (CD)

If you play that Neurosis/Isis strain of music, how are you going to set yourself apart from the likes of Tides, Mouth of the Architect, Souvenir's Young America, Angel Eyes, Disappearer, and all the other groups that have tread the same narrow path this year? If you're Denver's Across Tundras, you embrace your inner shitkicker and bury the vocals low in the mix. Acorss Tundras' sprawling compositions have more of a rock feel. It's as if they're playing something that, if sped up, could actually boogie. There's also a twangy aftertaste, a hint of alt-country. That could draw comparisons to Earth's Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, but Across Tundras isn't that ethereal and sparse. They're melancholy yet forward moving, and overall they live up to their billing of unleashing a "powerful new statement of rustic, crushing Americana."

Can't avoid the Isis comparisons but these guys do stray from the rigid mold. Songs are sprawling and the playing is really loose but stays heavy.

Battlefields - Stained with the Blood of an Empire (Color) (LP)

Limited edition with splattered red on translucent yellow vinyl.

Minnesota’s Battlefields manage to somehow mix the ambient soundscapes of Pelican, Isis and even the Red Sparowes and The Autumn Project, the caustic stylings of Converge as well as doom metal into one perfectly epic mix. Yes I can finally use the term ‘doomcore’! Stained with the Blood of an Empire is a masterful exercise in melding the density and weight of discordant hardcore with the evocative builds and ebbs of post rock and the oppression and mood of doom.

Beast in the Field - Goat Isle Seance (CD)

Limited edition of only 666 hand numbered copies.

Michigan's own Beast in the Field mixes a lot of Sleep worship with the lo-fi intensity of Lightning Bolt to create a heavy slab of energetic stoner metal. It's just one guitarist and a drummer, but a shitload of cabs makes this band easily one of the loudest I've ever heard in a live setting.

This opus conjures up flashbacks of Sleep's 'Jerusalem', only darker more dynamic and much more sonically crushing.

Beast in the Field - Lucifer, Bearer of Light (CD)

Exponential evil and sickening terror prevail on Beast In The Field's fourth album. 'Lucifer...' takes the foundation of riffs laid down on their last record, builds them up, and then turns them into dust. This is the soundtrack to destruction and decay, a 40 minute homage to the disintegrating world that will one day consume itself. Recorded onto two inch analog tape, it's brand new and yet ancient as the hills.

Beast in the Field - The Sacred Above the Sacred Below (CD)

The Sacred Above, the Sacred Below continues Beast in the Field‘s aural dominance in a manner so astoundingly fucking heavy that whatever ideas they want to put to it, I’m on board. Specifically this time, the artwork and song titles like, “Great Watcher of the Sky,” “Wakan Tanka” and “The Great Spirit of Light” abound with a Native American sensibility, as only the briefest moments of respite peak through the duo’s onslaught. Seriously, Jahr‘s snare drum is heavier sounding than most bands, and whether it’s on a shorter track like “Wakan Tanka” or the propulsive subsequent basher “There Once Were Mountains of Ice,” Beast in the Field retain their brutal sensibility all the way to and through the album apex of “Oncoming Avalanche”.

Empires - Through Trial & Tribulation Comes Triumph (CD)

Empires plays a melodic and doom-y take on instrumental music, in the vein of Jesu or Explosions in the Sky. Their songs might average six minutes or more, but they've got me excited and willing to listen through the whole, expansive tracks. Pulling that off, Empires may have transcended one of this genre's most annoying aspects -- parts of songs that often just don't fit and effectively take up time. Empires doesn't slow down and take three minute breaks of drudgery in the middle of their songs. When they write songs, they only build them up; they never look back, adding and modifying great riffs that match into each song. Each song paints a dark, moody picture, helping listeners feel emotional highs and lows. A solid effort, if not the best album of this genre I have heard in a long, long time. I can only hope the young masterminds behind Empires stay motivated enough to bless us with another effort sometime in the future.

Empires' blend of melody-laden doom conjures up feelings of a bittersweet hopelessness. While interpreting stories from the harshness of the natural world, "Through Trial & Tribulation Comes Triumph," the band's debut radiates their personal emotions of loss, hope despair and triumph through beautifully executed buildups. The drums and bass create pummeling rhythms and sub-melodies that can't help but remind you of the last dying days of the universe. Wilting guitars worm their way in and out of hypnotizing trance-like passages and sorrow filled melodies releasing vibrations of crushing despair as well as that of a remaining hope.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
