Black Rainbows - Carmina Diabolo (Color) (IMPORT) (2LP)

Limited edition on red vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve.

The band plays a kind of psychedelic Stoner Rock, that draws influences from acts like Nebula, the high and mighty Blue Cheer (hail!) and Slo Burn, as well as the groovy touches from Kyuss. The low tuned guitar and bass add some heaviness to the sound, while Fioriís vocals travel you somewhere in a desert, where you can see the sun setting as you drink your favorite beer and burn everything that troubles your mind. Suggested only to those few that can feel the heat of music that is played straight from the heart.

Black Rainbows - Twilight in the Desert (IMPORT) (CD)

Whatever the preconceptions, Twilight in the Desert is a commanding album, full of captivating songs. The spacey moog synthesized effects are utilised well, and the general sound sits somewhere between post-Dopes to Infinity Monster Magnet minus the pomp and The Heads minus half the drugs. At times it sounds uncannily like Scandinavians, We - to a point during "Constellations" where I'm checking I haven't slipped in their Dinosauric Futurobic disc in by mistake (the astronomic lyrics not helping to distinguish). What is here is done very well and provides an excitement that will last beyond the first few listens.

Honcho - Burning in Water, Drowning in Fire (IMPORT) (CD)

Burning in Water, Drowning in Fire is a solid album of ‘70s inspired fuzz rock. Recommended for fans of Astroqueen, Dozer, and Thulsa Doom.

Similar bands in style I'd have to say Pawnshop, Sunride, Zerocharisma, and especially The Awesome Machine. Also throw in a little Roachpowder circa Viejo Diablo for good measure. You know what I'm talking about right? That driving Swedish stoner rock with over-driven guitars and maximum groove. Well that's Honcho.

Medicine Ball Caravan - Crossing the Seas, Spreading the Sins (IMPORT) (CD)

Well, this French outfit is more ’70s than I imagined. Even '60s, at times. You can see lots of Jimi Hendrix or Cream or Mountain - in the guitar work, while Matt’s voice really is smoking and full of '70s/'80s dust. To compare with the pre-mentioned anticipation it is believed that '70s-era Aerosmith is an ideal source of inspiration for Medicine Ball Caravan to write powerful rockin’ tunes. Medicine Ball Caravan offers an album full of retro spark and some interesting songwriting for lovers of the '70s renditions. Firebird devotees or 'high' Cult followers will smile with this one.

Paperback Freud - All in a Day's Work (IMPORT) (CD)

Their sophomore effort, All In a Day’s Work, sees the band embracing their inner-Aerosmith, creating music that is rife with groove, funk and the essence of Rock ‘n' Roll.

Rite - Death I Hear You Calling But I Can't Come Home Rite Now (IMPORT) (CD)

This outfit is a down and dirty energetic sludge - Helmet / End of Level Boss style. It's heavy and and has this bleak tendency to pound your ass into the ground. The whole band just POUNDS the shit outta you. I think I'm in love.

Rite - Hobo Metall (IMPORT) (CD)

For those familiar with this five-piece, Hobo Metall won’t disappoint. Sure, there’s still a correlation between Rite and Entombed, but this time around, it’s not as direct. They leave a more distinct impression, and that impression is akin to a boot to the face. It’s metal – almost thrashy at times – that maintains a solid rock groove. While they flirt with melody here and there, it’s still dirty, ugly music. A more fitting title would’ve been Shit Kicking Tunes because Hobo Metall is perfect for kicking the shit out of someone. The album doesn’t fuck around.

Thunder Express - Republic Disgrace (IMPORT) (CD)

The Hellacopters' lead guitarist, Robert "Strings" Dahlqvist, new band!!!

Dahlqvist and the gang have traded in their slavish Exile on Main Street obsession to worship at the altar of Zeppelin and Skynyrd with a dash of Floyd. As disciples rather than clones they’ve served themselves well with this shift in tone and dynamic. While some might decry the familiarity in styles I say, “Huzzah!” because as much as I like Zep I have heard it. If someone wants to make music like that, and it’s good stuff, well, that’s welcome to my ears. They have widened their sound, dropped some of the horns, cranked up the harmonica and piano and created a more aural experience. In a way, they sound more like Dahlqvist’s other band, The Hellacopters, during their heyday. And this is a good thing. With The Hellacopters flying off into the sunset, I’m glad Thunder Express will be around to satisfy my retro-rock jones.

Republic Disgrace is a terrific rock and roll record that sounds like the product of an actual BAND. The vibe here is somewhat more laid back than The Hellacopters, and at their best the band grooves like the Mick Taylor-era Stones at their peak.

Robert Dahlquist, guitarist for the great Hellacopters, showed his songwriting abilities with his band Thunder Express on their debut album, We Play for Pleasure back in 2005. Now, with this new release Dahlquist and Co. get down with some of their own brand of old fashioned, no frills rock and roll. This band, heavily inspired by the all time greats MC5, Humble Pie, The Stones and The Faces, really sets out to have both fun and deliver a top notch performance. As a result, while their influences are apparent, the band really takes a step forward and showcases their collective talent on their sophomore release. Taking a cue from both The Solution and The Hellacopters, and in general from the aforementioned greats, the album has got that element all supreme rock action possess: bluesy background vocals and keyboards. Also, as a sidenote, Republic Disgrace is notable for guest contributions from both Mattias Barjed, Ebbot Lundberg Martin Hederos (TSOOL) and Mattias Hellberg.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
