Acid King - Busse Woods (Halloween Blend) (LP) Cover Art Acid King - Busse Woods (Halloween Blend) (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on Kelly green, black and halloween orange blend colored vinyl.

Acid King's Busse Woods makes a definitive statement of heaviness that more than makes up for their small number of releases. Interesting then, how this enormously dark and heavy CD is characterized by its laid back feel. There is no angst and bombast here, just super large fuzz riffs unfurled with taste and atmosphere... Just put on Busse (pronounced buss-ee) Woods and find out what she can do.

Acid King gets better every release. Their '97 split with Altamont contains one of the most massively oppressive doom instrumentals ever in "Phase II" and their latest Busse Woods is my favorite Man`s Ruin release of all time.

Like Electric Wizard and the Melvins, this is where rock music seperates itself completely from pop tradition. There are no songs at all, just riffs. This is really art music, existing completely outside traditional pop structures. Mood and atmosphere don't color these songs they ARE the songs. It's basically the stoned-out space rock of early UFO and Hawkwind brought farther down the line.

Acid King - Free/Down with the Crown (Red, White and Blue) (LP) Cover Art Acid King - Free/Down with the Crown (Red, White and Blue) (LP)

Limited edition on red, white and blue smoosh vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Dark, slow, slithering, strangely hypnotic, Acid King merges the fuzz of stoner-rock with the mood of doom, and demolishes any qualms about the apocalypse with the throaty, condemning vocals of Lori S. Joseph.

Acid King - III (Orange/Black) (LP) Cover Art Acid King - III (Orange/Black) (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on orange, white and black bleed vinyl.

Produced with the help of San Fransisco's legendary engineer Billy Anderson, this is the album that Lori and Co. were born to make. Filled with thundering low end and fat ass riffs III will redefine the definition of the word heavy for years to come.

This is how it’s done. Acid King’s III is a testament to the heavy. They’re among the leaders of psychedelic stoner metal. Less spacey than label mates Sons of Otis, more jam-oriented than doom outfits like Ufomammut and Electric Wizard, Acid King exist in a thunderous low-end that shakes foundations even at the lowest volume. Listening to songs like “”Wheel Nation” or “On to Everafter” is like watching molasses pour out of a jar. It’s thick and viscous, pooling together in a meaty muck. III’s one of those albums that refuses to let go of your subconscious. Chalk it up to Lori S’s spectral croon and her dense guitar riffs, or the heavier than thou rhythm section of Joey Osbourne (drums) and Guy Pinhas (bass).

Awesome slow stoner doom from a band that's perfected what they do.

Across Tundras - Dark Songs of the Prairie (White Splatter/Clear) (LP) Cover Art Across Tundras - Dark Songs of the Prairie (White Splatter/Clear) (LP)

Limited edition of only 100 copies with white splatter on clear vinyl!

If you play that Neurosis/Isis strain of music, how are you going to set yourself apart from the likes of Tides, Mouth of the Architect, Souvenir's Young America, Angel Eyes, Disappearer, and all the other groups that have tread the same narrow path this year? If you're Denver's Across Tundras, you embrace your inner shitkicker and bury the vocals low in the mix. Acorss Tundras' sprawling compositions have more of a rock feel. It's as if they're playing something that, if sped up, could actually boogie. There's also a twangy aftertaste, a hint of alt-country. That could draw comparisons to Earth's Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, but Across Tundras isn't that ethereal and sparse. They're melancholy yet forward moving, and overall they live up to their billing of unleashing a "powerful new statement of rustic, crushing Americana".

Can't avoid the Isis comparisons but these guys do stray from the rigid mold. Songs are sprawling and the playing is really loose but stays heavy.

Addaura - Burning for the Ancient (LP) Cover Art Addaura - Burning for the Ancient (LP)

Limited edition of only 400 copies on black vinyl.

Addaura is a four piece black metal band from Seattle, Washington that plays hauntingly beautiful and intense black metal. Originally formed in 2008, the band spent time writing and playing shows whilst developing what would become their current direction; an atmospheric sound influenced by early European black metal but more akin to American acts like Ludicra, Weakling, and Wolves in the Throne Room. The themes presented in Addaura's music are based from their existence and intends to elicit honest and thoughtful responses. Addaura will continue writing and performing music that allows for interpretation and remains grounded in the human experience.

Book of Black Earth - The Feast (Black) (LP) Cover Art Book of Black Earth - The Feast (Black) (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on black vinyl.

They are pure fury and doom. Lead vocalist Cowgill frantically lashes his throat against the spiny guitars and near-gothic keyboards. Then he pours salt in the lacerations and revels as you squirm.

The debut album by Seattle’s Book of Black Earth is a first-class exercise in what an aggressive symphonic black metal album should be: vicious, catchy, and uncompromising, without any hint of the cheesiness or pretense that plagues most acts that inhabit the genre. In fact, at most times the keyboards are so subtle and low in the mix, that it is easy to consciously miss them entirely amidst the constant barrage of deathened riffs and driving, impeccable percussion. There is something here for any fan of extreme, original black metal.

One thing impossible not to notice when listening to Book of Black Earth is prominence of the drums, which in my opinion provide a huge percentage of the band’s heaviness. As a unit this band is incredibly solid, they pound out some grinding death metal which at the end of the album leaves the listener wondering which track was their favorite, and as a result being forced to listen to the whole album again.

Something to be aware of...
By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
