Ahkmed - Distance (IMPORT) (CD)

Distance strikes me as being based in the progressive psychedelic rock aesthetic, falling somewhere between the grand statements of 35007 or labelmates My Sleeping Karma and the alt-shoegaze of Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound or The Black Angels. The band never really stretches too far in either direction, instead maintaining a pleasant balance that makes it easy to get caught up in the album's seven tracks.

All Them Witches - Our Mother Electricity (Black) (IMPORT) (LP)

Are you already in the mood for Spring and even better, for the Summer? Than turn on Our Mother Electricity from All Them Witches: a perfect album to do away with your slumbering winter depression. The first comparisons that come to mind: Danava, Kyuss light, old psychedelic rock like Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Mother Tongue, etc. The soundscape they are projecting is part ‘desert’, part old bluesy hard rock. There is a leading role for the drums too and you can’t help but smile at the keys.

Man, I love the influence the south has had on music. Whether it be blues, jazz, country, or rock something about the soul of the south etches itself in the music and it remains there... eternally. That southern soul is vibrant in Nashville's All Them Witches and one listen through Our Mother Electricity will make you a believer. The album is also completely dynamic.

For instance the first track Heavy/Like A Witch, with its Alice in Chains dual vocalizing, is heavily blues inspired with moments of intense doom and 70's era psychedelics and the very next track The Urn finds an Americana via alt country twang and has lyrical lines that demand to be sung along. The album continues to travel through fast paced rockers, soulful grooves and slower chill tracks. The final tracks Family Song For The Leaving and Right Hand are smooth, super chilled and full of luscious melody. Family... being an acoustic plucked gem really stands out while Right Hand has more of that Alice in Chains style vocalizing and then there is the sound of fingers sliding along the guitar strings... simply hypnotizing.

Ararat - II (Color) (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition of only 250 hand numbered copies on translucent green vinyl.

Great stoned soundscapes on Ararat’s second album, II. I remember I liked their debut album, Música de la Resistencia. The same goes more or less for this album: it sounds really great, but don’t expect any radio friendly memorable mighty stoner riffs. Feauturing Los Natas’ singer Sergio Chotsourian from Argentina, this is of course interesting material if you’re into Los Natas. The album works out as one gigantic movie score and it works actively to put you in some sort of trance. The overall feel is very loose and free, which works perfectly for this release. I have no idea if Los Natas is planning on getting together in the future. In the mean time we have to make do with this (and the first Música de la Resistencia) great release.

Been Obscene - Night O'Mine (IMPORT) (CD)

Been Obscene has shown an impressive amount of development – the instrumentalization has moved up a few notches at once, the drumming has taken a flying leap forward and the psychedelic and post-rock pastures are spread more evenly and enhances the flavor quite a bit. The album is much more vocal-driven than the previous one, but that doesn’t mean the instrumental passages have lessened. In fact, the instrumental passages have, if anything, grown more complex, with at least two instances of multi-layered, psychedelic pastures being explored in what are otherwise pretty straightforward songs. This provides the record with enough dynamism to engage you, but keeps it from going places that will lose you on the way – and, might I add, the atmosphere built is a lot darker and more brooding than you’d expect, and it comes off as a great big plus.

Beginning, The - This is... (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies!

As with all Elektrohasch releases this is a top shelf psychedelic rock record. Highly recommended to fans of Josiah, Baby Woodrose, On Trial and Liquid Sound Company.

The first half of the album shows that The Beginning’s strength is in loosely arranged bluesy rock. The start of the album offers classic rock grooves and fluid playing. At the halfway mark the band’s jamming veers towards psychedelic noodling. By the time the album ends, The Beginning have become more of a sonic jam band than anything else. It’s hard not to get caught up in the band’s energy. While their sound is distinctly from a bygone era they still have an original sound and feel.

The Beginnning are one of the great lost wonders of psychedelic rock. Their only album This is... was forgotten and lay dormant until recently when it was uncovered by Molten Records. Now available for the first time, it contains a mind altering selection of acid guitar music mixing rock 'n' roll grooves with a twin lead guitar attack. Flashes of the ever-so-fluid San Francisco psychedelic improvisation merge with hard edged Detroit rock and hip stoned grooviness. The overall result is a sound that's part Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones Yesterdays Children and Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Causa Sui - Free Ride (IMPORT) (CD)

This is mind-bending, spaced out, loosely constructed triprock of the first order. A combination of The Stooge's Funhouse, Hawkwind's In Search of Space or Doremi and Monster Magnet's Superjudge with doses of Blue Cheer.

This is perfect trip n' roll for a sunny afternoon frying under the sun, while all your worries seep away. Sonically there are a lot less layers in the music. However, this makes it sound massive. The sound is so expansive without being complex, and the tones of each instrument are a lot more dialed. The guitars have this wicked fucking Hendrix-ian tone to them, and whenever there's wah-wah it's like listening to Woodstock again. Plus he has the chops to match. What does this all mean? Well a sonically perfect album mixed with amazing music makes for one hell of a sophomore for Causa Sui.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
