Altar of Oblivion - Salvation (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies. Black vinyl. Silver foil stamp album cover.

The album's got all you want from a doom band: slow, trudging riffs that crushes everything in its path as well as those slightly up-tempo galloping riffs to break the slow speed and give some dynamics. That tends to make the long songs go by a little faster than they seem to be. There's a great atmosphere to the album. The vocalist has a great range, ranging from a baritone to a high tenor at some points, much like Messiah or Johan from Candlemass.

It's hard to choose the hits from just a 5-song album, but "Threshold to Oblivion" and "The Narrow Gates of Emptiness" are the most solid. And as if doomy songs just weren't enough for these guys, the frantic track, "Salvation," seems like it comes out of a death metal album with lots of blast beats, harsh vocals, and minor chords. It's rather quirky sounding, seemingly out of place, or at least just very unexpected for a first time listener. And then to fuck with your mind again, they change pace midway and go back to their slow, operatic style. The last track is a nice, 2-minute instrumental, a flourishing finish to a fantastic little album.

Green & Wood - Self Titled (Color) (LP)

Limited edition on translucent green vinyl. Includes a poster.

Green and Wood are a power trio who mine the same blues-based metal ranging from Sabbath to Sleep that we're so accustomed to hearing around these parts, and they do it quite well. They cover the full length and breadth of the "stoner" spectrum, from the mid-tempo power grooves, to the slow and low heavy riffing, to the darker psychedelic passages, and they often do it succinctly within the context of a single song. Bands like Witchcraft, Burning Saviours, Graveyard, and Witch all pulled this off and raised the bar considerably from the first notes of their first albums, and now you can add Green and Wood to that illustrious list. Highly recommended expect to see this one on my end of the year top ten.

Mammoth Grinder - Extinction of Humanity (Color) (LP)

Limited edition on translucent orange vinyl.

For me, it is difficult to classify Mammoth Grinder. They play a strain of hardcore that mixes elements of sludge, crust, and d-beat. Metallic hardcore I guess? They have elements of that Tragedy d-beat sound everyone is trying to duplicate right now, but in addition, they implement sludgy slow parts reminiscent of Eyehategod or Black Sabbath. Unlike Tragedy, Mammoth Grinder is able to harness an aggressively violent sound that many bands fall short at producing.

Mammoth Grinder has two speeds: "seek" and "destroy". The trio takes dead aim at the latter on sophomore 12-inch Extinction of Humanity , a Texas chain saw massacre at 45 rpm, at times recalling the early prog-metal fury of Mastodon.

Roller, The - Wasted Heritage (Color) (LP)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on color vinyl. Includes a digital download card.

Wasted Heritage is the kind of album where the more abrasive it is, the better it gets, and The Roller keep it plenty punishing for the duration. Their pace runs from slow to “fuck you,” with the latter at whatever speed you want it to be. It’s great at loud volumes great for road rage and some of the most malicious sludge I’ve heard this year.

Sungod - First Matter (LP)

Includes a MP3 coupon.

Somewhere, at some point in time, somebody gave one of the two members of Austin, Texas, psychedelic newcomers Sungod a copy of Nebula’s To the Center, and it’s a good thing they did. The duo (doesn’t anyone have a bassist anymore?) have taken this heavy, grooving influence and stretched it out as far as it’ll go, abandoning for the most part the aforementioned band’s penchant for catchy choruses in favor of wide-breadth atmospherics on their debut, First Matter. The album’s five tracks follow a reverse-parabola structure, starting long, getting shorter in the middle, then longer again at the finish, but there’s more to the flow than nifty toying around with the track list. Sungod worship at a number of altars and their sound -- in no small part thanks to liberal guitar layering -- is surprisingly full for an act without a full-time bassist.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
