Dead Man - Euphoria (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Dead Man - Euphoria (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition! Deluxe gatefold sleeve!

DEAD MAN, whose members possess a wealth of musical experience derived from time spent in various Swedish acts (including the hard rock band NORRSKEN, which also featured in its ranks current WITCHCRAFT front man Magnus Pelander and GRAVEYARD members Joakim Nilsson and Rikard Edlund), play magnetic, spirited rock with melancholic undertones and "a slight touch of darkness" (calling for comparisons to Jefferson Airplane, Blue Cheer, Dungen and Dead Meadow). Each member of the quartet is a multi-instrumentalist, which allows the band to build unique, lush atmospheres replete with both acoustic tinge and electric crunch.

To simply call Dead Man a retro-rock band is honestly not that accurate. Yes, there are plenty of moments where you'll hear that warm, familiar proto-doom guitar tone in the riffing and soloing, but Dead Man pull a wealth of intriguing cards from their sleeve to really help stamp a unique footprint in this now well-traveled path; and that footprint is swirled and surrounded by a mood that's chiefly breezy and blithe, thanks to Dead Man's copious use of feel-good folk. Dead Man take that jaunty, sunny folk and build it around a structure that's more focused towards psych/prog/doom-rock, which makes the formula work much better for me, and gives Dead Man a pretty unique sound when compared to their Swedish peers (eg Witchcraft, Burning Saviours and Graveyard).

"Euphoria" will be an essential part of my rotation as the carefree days of summer approach. Every tune presented is strong enough to stand on its own, and the production is clear enough to pick out a wealth of enjoyable nuances as this fine work slowly begins to set root in your marrow. Be careful, though, your girlfriend/wife/significant other might begin to realize there's a softer side to you if you crank this album as much as I have the last couple weeks. I admit I'm pretty addicted. BUT, I can assure you, I will still never -- even after 10,000 years and 10,000 beers -- be caught sporting sandals of any sort and kicking a hacky sack around with my "bro's" in a park. That shit's strictly for the hippies. "Euphoria", on the other hand, is something we can definitely agree on. It ain't metal but I highly recommend it.

Spiders - Flash Point (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Spiders - Flash Point (IMPORT) (CD)

Itís a well known fact by now that the Swedes posses some of the best talent in music. Bands such as Graveyard, Witchcraft, The Truckfighters, Dozer and Greenleaf are fine examples that I believe solidify my statement. Spiders are certainly on that list. Their debut full length, Flash Point, follows up a string of successful 7" and 10" releases.

Take Graveyard, take out the retro feeling, add female vocals, some punk, a little bit of blues, and plenty of garage rock. The sound isnít a retro or vintage garage rock that youíd hear in bands such as Cherry Choke but more modern. Close to The White Strips with a little more oomph. Flash Point could easily be an album of the year candidate. I know itís going to end up on my list somewhere. The fast and rugged sound is the selling point for me.

Despite originally having members from both Graveyard and Witchcraft, Spiders mostly leaves the proto-doom sounds behind, favoring high energy garage rock, MC5, Alice Cooper and other pre-punk along the lines of Australiaís Radio Birdman and Clevelandís Rocket From the Tombs. With building blocks from the 60s and 70s, they sound familiar but somehow fresh. I canít think of any other band that shares their retro yet contemporary hybrid sound. Flash Point sounds like it was recorded fast and loose to capture their live energy. Not to say the band isnít tight, but the high velocity guitar leads jump outside the lines just enough to keep their edges roughed up.

Something to be aware of...
By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
