Baby Woodrose - I'm Gonna Make You Mine (Color) (IMPORT) (7 inch)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on white vinyl.

“I’m Gonna Make You Mine” is a beautiful, mid-tempo, melodic and organ-driven psych rocker that has both acoustic guitar and nice fuzz sounds. It’s a really great number that sort of reminds me of 13th Floor Elevators. “Information Overload” is a straight-forward, tight and excellent garage blast with plenty of energy. The tinkling piano adds even more punch to the song, and this rather heavy track rocks like there’s no tomorrow. Just get this single and do it right now!

The captain of the trip, Lorenzo Woodrose, proves once again that he knows exactly what should be done, to make things so un-hip that it becomes almost just as hip as Moby Grape used to be. I still haven’t had the chance to hear the new album, but if it’s to be judged by this Seedy corker of an A-side, with the electric piano being replaced by Farfisa, there’s at least one more thing for me to chase besides rainbows, and it's the album itself! As for the B-side, most of the information it's being overloaded with, comes from the ballsier side of late ‘60s ‘Stones, fueled with some dirty Motor City oil. Make it yours!

Blues Pills - Bliss (IMPORT) (10 inch)

Features members of Radio Moscow.

After departing from Radio Moscow in September 2011, drummer Cory Berry and bass player Zack Anderson joined up with Swedish lead singer Elin Larsson and Swedish drummer Jonas Askerlund. Heavy, driving bass lines, colossal drums (via Jonas Moses Askerlund, drummer of Swedish band Dead Man), and Berry’s ferocious, riff based, soul-penetrating guitar work are a sublime compliment to the vocalist. Tied together by the soulful Elin Larson (sometimes singing in her mother-tongue) her stage presence gives one the impression of being seduced by some Valkyrie’s love song — or maybe her battle cry.

Dead Man - Euphoria (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition! Deluxe gatefold sleeve!

DEAD MAN, whose members possess a wealth of musical experience derived from time spent in various Swedish acts (including the hard rock band NORRSKEN, which also featured in its ranks current WITCHCRAFT front man Magnus Pelander and GRAVEYARD members Joakim Nilsson and Rikard Edlund), play magnetic, spirited rock with melancholic undertones and "a slight touch of darkness" (calling for comparisons to Jefferson Airplane, Blue Cheer, Dungen and Dead Meadow). Each member of the quartet is a multi-instrumentalist, which allows the band to build unique, lush atmospheres replete with both acoustic tinge and electric crunch.

To simply call Dead Man a retro-rock band is honestly not that accurate. Yes, there are plenty of moments where you'll hear that warm, familiar proto-doom guitar tone in the riffing and soloing, but Dead Man pull a wealth of intriguing cards from their sleeve to really help stamp a unique footprint in this now well-traveled path; and that footprint is swirled and surrounded by a mood that's chiefly breezy and blithe, thanks to Dead Man's copious use of feel-good folk. Dead Man take that jaunty, sunny folk and build it around a structure that's more focused towards psych/prog/doom-rock, which makes the formula work much better for me, and gives Dead Man a pretty unique sound when compared to their Swedish peers (eg Witchcraft, Burning Saviours and Graveyard).

"Euphoria" will be an essential part of my rotation as the carefree days of summer approach. Every tune presented is strong enough to stand on its own, and the production is clear enough to pick out a wealth of enjoyable nuances as this fine work slowly begins to set root in your marrow. Be careful, though, your girlfriend/wife/significant other might begin to realize there's a softer side to you if you crank this album as much as I have the last couple weeks. I admit I'm pretty addicted. BUT, I can assure you, I will still never -- even after 10,000 years and 10,000 beers -- be caught sporting sandals of any sort and kicking a hacky sack around with my "bro's" in a park. That shit's strictly for the hippies. "Euphoria", on the other hand, is something we can definitely agree on. It ain't metal but I highly recommend it.

Dead Man - Self Titled (Clear) (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition of only 100 copies on clear vinyl.

Deeply and firmly rooted in the 70's... with one foot in rock like Zeppelin, Josefus (who made an album named Dead Man), Cain and many others... and the other in the early Swedish prog scene, this four piece from Orebro, Sweden sound more like their album recently was a rediscovered gold nugget from 1969. A big plus for Kristoffer Sjoedahl's superb vocals and the bands feeling for melody and harmony. Another thing that must be mentioned is the effort put in to make the production sound so authentically retro. Dead Man is clearly one of the bands topping the Swedish 70's retro rock scene. Do not miss this.

TIP: By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
