High on Fire/Ruins - Split 7 inch (7 inch) Cover Art High on Fire/Ruins - Split 7 inch (7 inch)

Includes a comic by Rob Syers (Gumball the Cat) and Mark Fischer.

High on Fire's song appears on their album, Blessed Black Wings, but taken out of the context of the album and sided against the Ruins it changes the perspective of the song. You're given the chance to soak in “Brother in the Wind” with ample time afterwards to think about how you were just laid out by just one song.

The Ruins are a bass and drums duo from Japan who have been around in one form or another for longer than I can remember. They offer up “Gwodhunga,” a schizophrenic mathy mover with indecipherable lyrics. The structure is all over the place as the duo jumps around from scheme to scheme as expected, but unlike some of their other work, the song ends with full closure.

High on Fire - The Art of Self Defense (CD) Cover Art High on Fire - The Art of Self Defense (CD)

The man that built the already legendary pyramid of Sleep albums has just balanced a giant boulder right on top. "The Art of Self-Defense" has six times the songs of the final Sleep epic ("Jerusalem" was one 54-minute track) and is significantly shorter. The impact however, could not be greater.

If you are into crushingly heavy music but feel like you haven’t been offered anything fresh original and heavy in a long time then ‘The Art of Self Defense’ is an absolute must for you.

This is what I wanted to hear from High on Fire. This is the sound of greatness, the sound of a band that can now do no wrong. With Steve Albini’s production, you finally get to hear every minute detail of what makes High on Fire so colossal, so huge, so absolutely fucking metal. The album starts where Surrounded by Thieves ended, with drummer Des Kensel pounding out a tribal rhythm, and then Matt Pike and new bassist Joe Preston launch into one of many thrashy riffs. Each member gets equal footing on Blessed Black Wings, and the strengths of the three gel into one ugly, pummeling menace. The prevalent theme of Blessed Black Wings is simple – destroy. Whether it’s the Venom meets Motorhead drive of “Cometh Down Hessian” and “Silver Back” or the pummeling title track, High on Fire are cleaving a path of destruction.

Blessed Black Wings is a sharpened to-the-nanometer blade that could cause your jugular to burst just by looking at it. Des Kensel has a unique and unquestionably recognizable brutal drumming style that is as much a bedrock of High on Fire's sound as Pike's massive guitar and growling voice. Joe Preston's experience with crafting music using extreme volume certainly must have helped Pike take this new release to the next level we see, hear, and feel. Blessed Black Wings bears the mark of true musical talent and song craft. It is state of the art and timeless. It is a modern classic and a high water mark that will be talked about for years to come.

High on Fire - Death is this Communion (Color) (LP) Cover Art High on Fire - Death is this Communion (Color) (LP)

Limited edition on colored vinyl!

On Death Is This Communion, the three-piece (with Zeke's Jeff Matz filling the bass slot) is still marching off to battle, but they're showing no signs of weariness. In fact, they sound even more invigorated than before. “Fury Whip” gallops straight out of the gate with its thrashy riff and pummeling, thunderous rhythm. “Faster! Heavier!” seems to be the main theme to the album, with the band going full-bore as often as possible. High on Fire has delivered another outstanding album. As is the case with their other releases - recommended.

This is insanely good, the riffs are pummeling, the solos make my jaw drop, and some of the arrangements, particularly some of the endings, surprised the shit out of me. Pike has definitely stepped it up on all levels, including the vocals, if you ask these ears, the bass playing is great, and the drumming crushes as usual. My only complaint is that those 56 minutes fly by far too fast.

This is absolutely mammoth, assaulting you shitless with thunderous riff after thunderous riff. Bow down, suckers!

Limited edition of only 598 copies on green and orange vinyl. Deluxe tip-on gatefold sleeve.

With a heavy-hoofed gallop, the gargantuan High On Fire bash out towering dimensions of sound on the highly-anticipated "Surrounded by Thieves". Burning down the pillars of time with quadrupled intensity, High On Fire inject tonal infectiousness as the mammoth, plaster-cracking guitar and throaty war cries of founding member Matt Pike (SLEEP) interlock with elephantine bass grooves and cannon-like percussion creating the last word in paralysis by sheer volume. "Surrounded by Thieves" perfectly delivers the behemoth sounds of an immense band. Sonic its sound... Destroyer comes down.

Something to be aware of...
By default, the search results include titles from The Archive. This will often give the impression that we don't do a very good job of keeping our titles in stock. This is not the case! Most of our 3,500+ active catalog titles are restocked regularly. It's the 7,500+ archived titles that are "unavailable". Use the search refinement options or do more specific searches if you're seeing too many "unavailable" items. Also, results are sorted by date with the newest releases at the top. Again, you can use the search refinement options to change this.

  • Refine by Category > All Else will hide archived titles and only show active catalog titles. (only available when there are enough search results to warrant it)
  • Sort By and Refine By Record Label Provide many options for more specific search results.
