16 Bridges to Burn (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Enduring, seminal and nihilistic to the core – California’s 16 have reformed and bounced back with the most intense, bleak and powerful album of their lengthy career. There’s no optimism here, throughout this awesome sludge-packed dirty affair Cris Jerue and Co. fist-fuck their way through 12 vignettes of how shit life can be. In fact, the titles alone sum up the mood of this album. The soundtrack to a life of living in the gutter? You bet!

16 Curves That Kick (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Curves That Kick, the long out-of-print debut album from SoCal quartet 16, threw the doors open to a new, post-Helmet/AmRep sound of discordance and discontent. Originally released on Pushead’s Bacteria Sour label in ’93, the album exposed the nascent beginnings of the soon-to-be infamous quartet. As Curves That Kick proved then and underscores now in its remixed and remastered form, 16 is its own unique, belligerent human animal.

16 Drop Out (LP)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Limited edition of only 500 copies on 180gr. black vinyl. Debut album from drug-addled thunderfuck champions, 16. A heavy dose of terminally deviant tirades blown over bleary narco-rhythms, and overly punishing riffs, and delivered at maximum volume.

Alabama Thunderpussy Constellation (Re-issue) (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Re-issue of the Man's Ruin classic with 2 bonus tracks and new artwork!! Lying somewhere between the melodies of C.O.C. and the vicious angst of EyeHateGod, with nods to such classics as Skynyrd and Sabbath; and drawing from both sides with amazing taste, ATP have created a very powerful record.

Alabama Thunderpussy Fulton Hill (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
The production on Fulton Hill is absolutely stellar. With guitarist Erik Larson (along with Mark Miley and the rest of the guys) at the boards, the band has never sounded better. Everyone shines, but the guitars sound most spectacular. Ryan Lake shreds here. The dual guitar leads approach Maiden-esque territory in some parts with fantastic harmonies. ATP are one of those bands that earned every single one of their fans—the hard way. Those fans will find a lot t...

Alabama Thunderpussy Open Fire (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
A much more aggressive balls out metal album than the previous ones. Kyle’s voice just fits perfectly, the riffs crush, Ryan’s solo’s are incredible as usual, and the drums and bass pound out the back end. Definitely the best album I’ve heard so far this year, and it’ll be a tough one for anyone to top.

Originally issued on cult label Man's Ruin on the heels of their Rise Again debut, ATP's River City Revival is a raw, rough-and-tumble capture of an Amercian hard rock band finding their voice. Alabama Thunderpussy Staring at the Divine (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
This latest release by ATP is a slew of punishingly heavy rock numbers that are verging on early metal. Lots of riffs and turn around parts that have you banging your head to the driving parts and swirling during the unique one off changes and such. Production wise it can't be beat. The vocals are panned often and have good effects that really make them stand out, but don't disguise the excellent melodies. Strong front man with tons of energy...set's the mood just nice...

Baroness Blue Record (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Blue Record could be considered their prog album, as it takes the grandiose tendencies and epic arrangements they displayed so well on their initial full length, and follows those ideas through to their logical next levels. It's a thoroughbred rock ALBUM like they used to make of old, with a smattering of proggy sensibilities and a willingness to go pretty "out there" at times, without losing the flow or really having a clunker of a track. When all's said and done, th...

Baroness Red Album (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
The band has always had a knack for prog-like arrangements, and here they explore them more fully. There's an epic quality to the songs, with riffs that twist and turn yet manage to hit the right notes at the right times. And in spite of the more melodic vocals and lessened distortion, Red Album isn't Top 40 ready at all. In fact, it's just as complicated as before – Baroness just takes a different approach, one that's more classic metal-oriented. Think Iron Mai...

Birds of Prey Sulfur & Semen (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Features members of Alabama Thunderpussy, Beaten Back to Pure, Baroness and The Last Van Zandt! Weight of the Wound was about as subtle as a kick to the crotch, replete with lyrical content that was basically an 11 year old boy's fascination with poking dead, rotting things with a stick. And then pissing on them. Sulfur and Semen is basically more of the same, although done better, heavier, and meaner. I'm hesitant to use the word “nuanced” to describe the album, but t...

Birds of Prey The Hellpreacher (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
The Hellpreacher, the deathly Southern metal supergroup Birds of Prey are — appropriately enough — taking to the underground. Marking the return of ubiquitous drummer Dave Witte (Burnt by the Sun, Municipal Waste, etc.), The Hellpreacher is the third Birds outing, and unlike its two predecessors is a full-on narrative concept record. With the triplet-heavy riffage of guitarists Erik Larson (Axehandle, Hail!Hornet, ex-Alabama Thunderpussy) and Bo Leslie (Throttlerod) a...

Birds of Prey Weight of the Wound (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Featuring Erik Larson (Alabama Thunderpussy, ex-Avail), Bo Leslie (The Last Van Zant, ex-Throttlerod), Summer Welch (Baroness), Ben Hogg (Beaten Back to Pure) and Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, Burnt by the Sun, Discordance Axis). You hear that? Sort of a filthy rumble? Kind of sounds like the soundtrack to the Four Horsemen as they rain death upon the land? Hard to believe this supergroup is a side-project, isn't it? See, Birds of Prey, the architects of the nastiness i...
