Eagles of Death Metal Heart On (CD)
Label: Downtown Origin: USA
There are more important rock groups than Eagles of Death Metal, but are any of them this much fun? Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme are essentially a comedy act, sending up and celebrating that high-Seventies hybrid of garage, glam and ZZ Top: scuzz rock. On their third album, the duo are as danceable as ever, but they've tiptoed away from straight musical pastiche, crudding up their blues boogie with low-fi fuzziness and oddball percussion. Much of the fun is in the lyric...

Egypt Self Titled (CD)
Label: MeteorCity Origin: USA
Its laid back stoner jams convey the arid desert of the Sahara. Sabbath (duh) dutifully rears its head amongst the influences, but not to the point where you’re hearing duplicate riffs exported from the ‘70’s. There’s also a more straightforward Hawkwind and classic Deep Purple style to the album, as if Geezer had replaced Lemmy and the whole gang went on a shrooms bender, meeting up with Richie Blackmore later on for a couple of pints. Obviously, this is good stuff, a...

After all, Eighteen Wheels Burning has Jeff Mackey and Adam Valk, the bassist and guitarst (respectively) from that classic underground band. You won’t get an exact replica of The Want’s Zeppelin-like rock, but Eighteen Wheels Burning follow the same rough template – classic rock revisited.

El Chupa Cobras Self Titled (CD)
Label: Acerbic Noise Development Origin: USA
Wow! We’ve got some off-the-wall underground, proggy yet messy, uh… gee I have no idea what the heck this is. The closest thing I can say is maybe it’s indie/prog with a little bit of grind and math metal? The throat wrecking screaming gets interspersed with a spoken word sort of yell, at times reminding me of The Locust. If you’re familiar with them, then you know how much they piss people off by just making music, which is always a plus here. Don’t forget, the word “...

End of Level Boss Prologue (CD) (Import)
Label: Exile on Mainstream Origin: Germany
Featuring members of Hangnail and Flood. This is a hell of a debut. The songs are immediately accessible, yet repeat listens bring forth new angles. For all eight of the songs, the riff remains king, so while there are prog influences, the music is still as direct as a brick to the head. Armstrong’s voice reminds me of a less shrill Erik AK (Flotsam and Jetsam) or a junk free Layne Staley. Either way, it adds a gritty edge to the rough, abrasive music.

Fistula For a Better Tomorrow (CD EP)
Label: Corley Music Origin: USA
Grab the rot gut whiskey and unfiltered cigarettes, because Fistula's back with a new EP, For a Better Tomorrow. The two year absence has done little to temper the band (Bing, guitarist/vocalist Bahb Branca, and new drummer, 16's Jason Corley). If you're unfamiliar with the band, I guess the best way of describing them is southern swamp sludge, ala Eyehategod. It's a suffocating sound, with a wall of guitars, the bass in lockstep, pounding drums, and anguished, ...

Freedom Hawk Self Titled (CD)
Label: MeteorCity Origin: USA
This group is solid. Driven by powerful drum beats and excellently crafted guitar work, Freedom Hawk have composed seven exceptional hard rock tracks that dabble in metal and psychedelic and have a certain timeless quality to them. Attributing to this timelessness is the lead singer’s vocal performance. His melodic high-pitched vocals are reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne with traces of Robert Plant. The songs are a lot of fun, meant to be played loud, and will immediately ...

Fu Manchu Signs of Infinite Power (CD)
Label: Century Media Origin: USA
Signs of Infinite Power is classic Fu Manchu in riffs, attitude, and execution. Nobody does SoCal fuzz rock as good as Fu Manchu. Signs of Infinite Power is another keeper from a band that shows no signs of slowing down or, thankfully, growing up.
