To say that their fire has waned would be hugely inaccurate – The Curse of Martha Splatterhead is a ridiculously frenetic and enjoyable album. For the most part, the pace here is an unrelenting display of speed. Drum patterns mix the frenzied but controlled approach you'd expect to find on a Slayer album. The Curse of Martha Splatterhead is an invigorating listen from start to finish. It doesn't get more cathartic than this. ($15.99)

Acid Witch plays a very trippy, psychedelic and unsurprisingly horror influenced form of doom metal. Yet it's delivered with such unabashed childishness and goofiness, a possible result of what the Scoody Doo cartoon theme would sound like if Electric Wizard had penned it. You'll find elements of Cathedral here, some Witchfinder General there, and some slight nods to Pentagram. Add to that some of Electric Wizard's ultra bassy, fuzzy, and distorted guitar tone and booming production values. Like other traditional doom metal albums, the riffs and rhythm patterns move in a lumbering and lurching fashion yet somehow the Witchsters inject some nice doses of sensual grooves that recall 70's Deep Purple. During various listening sessions I felt like I was inside Satan's smoke filled strip club watching strippers complete with horns and cloven hooves gyrating their lovely tail clad asses for the merriment of us sinners and then suddenly I somehow realized that perhaps hell isn't really a bad place after all. I hate Sundays but I love Sunday's music and that's what this sounds like to me. By that I obviously do not mean that Chicxulub should only be played on Sundays but that it's got a dense and kinda melancholic vibe to it. It is not depressing at all. Nor morose nor somber. Instead, it's loaded with psychedelia, distortion and laid back arrangements that could best be described by the word 'introspective'. It's a bit of an inward moving record. One that calls to reflection and induces you to spacing out. Pink Floyd is a big point of reference. It's a record to escape the truth, the truth being that in just a few hours it'll be Monday and on Mondays we become robots once more in this endless routine of life. ($12.99)

Distance strikes me as being based in the progressive psychedelic rock aesthetic, falling somewhere between the grand statements of 35007 or labelmates My Sleeping Karma and the alt-shoegaze of Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound or The Black Angels. The band never really stretches too far in either direction, instead maintaining a pleasant balance that makes it easy to get caught up in the album's seven tracks. ($14.99)

Melbourne, Australia's Ahkmed is really on to something. Their self-described sound is "post-stoner," and that's an apt description, as the band fuses the more traditional psych and fuzz utilized so often by the best of the stoner bunch with the more atmospheric instrumental approach of bands such as Pelican and the more recent Mogwai albums. The band has always had a knack for prog-like arrangements, and here they explore them more fully. There's an epic quality to the songs, with riffs that twist and turn yet manage to hit the right notes at the right times. And in spite of the more melodic vocals and lessened distortion, Red Album isn't Top 40 ready at all. In fact, it's just as complicated as before – Baroness just takes a different approach, one that's more classic metal-oriented. Think Iron Maiden as interpreted by Today Is the Day. As the band's often compared to Mastodon (for good reason – some of Baroness' snake-like riffs are very reminiscent), you could say Red Album is their Leviathan. While it's definitely a bit of a creative gambit, it's by no means a failure. What at first seems like a from-left-field change ultimately turns out to be more of a natural evolution. ($13.99)

Much more depth than say Black Mountain, with interesting songs that are layered and take several listens to fully reveal their nuance. It's dark and droney but oddly psychedelic too and very very hooky without being obvious. The opening tune is an absolute stone cold classic. A good candidate for the best band in the world at the moment, they've got the lot. ($13.99)

Given that this Austin five-piece cribbed it's name from the Velvet Underground, it's not surprising that they pay such homage to Lou Reed and Co with their full-length debut. What is surprising is how well they've done it. Passover has that sparse, almost trance-like hippy rock. It's not quite languid, but it never really has an immediate push. Instead, the songs slowly but surely crawl under your skin, hypnotizing you with their '60's rock influenced, opium den inspired grooves. There's something really subtly captivating about Passover. For fans of the Velvet Underground, early Floyd, Hawkwind, Black Mountain, Lord Sterling, and for those who need a soundtrack to their fever dreams. ($13.99)

Black Boned Angel understand what drone is about; no vocals, very simple drums, heaps of feedback and massive guitar riffs that repeat over and over until your eardrums are all loose and bleeding from the vigorous bass-rape. Black Boned Angel have kept things extremely simple here, and it's to their credit that they did. It's all very long and droney, sure, and it certainly won't set your world on fire unless you're a massive drone fan, as this is almost as pure a distillation of drone doom as you can get. It's truly glorious, though, and the massive ending of the final track- the war choirs, the chords, the sounds of battle sound like Bolt Thrower covering Sunn O)))- is a really fitting ending. Not good if you want to impress hipster chicks with your knowledge of 20th century classical, perhaps, but perfect if you're out for some massive, thick-as-molasses drone doom that presses all the right buttons. At times it sounds uncannily like Scandinavians, We - to a point during "Constellations" where I'm checking I haven't slipped in their Dinosauric Futurobic disc in by mistake (the astronomic lyrics not helping to distinguish). What is here is done very well, and provides an excitement that will last beyond the first few listens. ($12.99)

While still in Kyuss, he produced Fu Manchu¹s first album, and shortly thereafter he took up skin duties with the band. He is one of the most energetic and groove-driven drummers you will ever see live His drumming is as mystical as his afro (that he recently cut off... but is growing back nicely). On his new release, Brant Bjork and The Operators, Bjork has retained that feel of the desert, but rarely hides the fact that he's given to leisure travel as the mood suits him. He is not afraid to take chances, and, in this case, they pay off! Combining 70¹s pop sensibility with a groove and funk all his own, Bjork has created a sound unlike any of his fellow desert-rock peers. He proudly wears his influences on his sleeve and puts his own signature sound into it to create a truly unique experience. ($20.99)

A "supergroup" of sorts, Captain Beyond consisted of ex-members of Deep Purple (vocalist Rod Evans), Iron Butterfly (guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhart and bassist Lee Dorman), and Johnny Winter's band (drummer Bobby Caldwell). This album is definitely one of the most interesting of the era. The musicianship rises to an extraordinary level, led by drummer Bobby Caldwell. I would describe his style as combining jazzlike delicacy and complexity with rocklike power. The album also has a full, encompassing feel. I guess it's sort of a concept album, with all the songs bleeding into the next and earlier songs establishing lyrical and musical themes the band follows throughout the course of the album. The songs weave to create a varied, textured framework that keeps things interesting. Sporadic, well-placed touches of elements like piano and Latin percussion makes for an even more engrossing listen. This album deserves a listen by any at all interested in the roots of stoner rock. ($30.99)

This album is far tighter and more spacey than the Self Titled. There is little to no structure to these songs. The percussion is fucking killer and seems to almost be the lead instrument a lot of the time. I'd like to be in a band that "covers" this album nightly, just taking it wherever the fuck it goes. Limited edition of only 500 copies. Carlton Melton is a band made to be a cult favorite among those that love improvisational and instrumental music. They sound too trippy and weird to ever be big, but they do know how to make something engaging out of what sounds like nothing more than impromptu jamming. There are similarities with latter-day Earth but where theirs is a dry, dusty character, Carlton Melton literally rise above and offer up spacey and ethereal soundscapes. For those that appreciate music that breathes and takes its time, that is made for concentrated listening Carlton Melton are a new acquaintance to embrace. They may remain unknown but will be liked by those that still love rock with an experimental edge. ($16.99)

Slovenia-based Carnaval use off kilter rhythms, strong vocals, and a quirky, Nirvana-like approach to songwriting. Rolled together, they give the band a more unique voice, one that could've been easily lost had they dumbed it down and went for a more obvious route. ($13.99)

Colour Haze have a new one out, and it's a long album! Let me tell you. It's a double CD of some of the best stoner psychedelic rock out of Germany... There are some gems among these songs that are definitely worth checking into. If you aren't familiar with the Colour Haze, their sound is a mix of the desert sounds with tones of Monster Magnet, Kyuss and even maybe some Can influence. Some of the tunes are 10 minutes long and sometimes as much as 18 minutes! Great long epic songs that all travel from beginning to end, groove after groove. If you dig the sounds of Kyuss Sky Valley, you might like the jams on this. It's Jazz, psychedelic, bluesy and heavy... Classic influenced stoner rock- guitars and all. Other bands to consider: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, early Santana jams, Blue Cheer. I hear a little of everthing for certain. ($16.99)

Includes a bonus track not found on the vinyl version! I've been sitting on this one for a while, listening to the CD over and over, but never bothering to write about it. I admit that's bad behavior for a critic, but Periscope, like the other Colour Haze albums, is too good for multitasking. If I'm going to listen to it, I'm going to listen to it and say to hell with everything else. This album has the band continuing to define their signature sound. There's the familiar distorted growl that stems from Kyuss, and rumbling underneath are jazzier rhythms and fluid bass playing. Mixed together, you get a highly emotive style of music that's as introspective as it's uplifting. The band finds a natural groove and lets it grow naturally. Nothing's forced – it's an incredibly organic sound. The best way of describing Colour Haze is to call it "beautiful." Which explains why I've had such a rough time writing about Periscope. But there's no sense in me being greedy and hoarding it all to myself. ($14.99)

The other worldly, Tolkien inspired dreamy rock has been the only constant throughout their career. They have dabbled in more Hendrix-like guitar rock on their Self Titled album, to more of a droney, trance inducing style of Shivering Kings and Others, to straight up folk by way of Pink Floyd on Feathers. They have evolved again and it's the absolute definition of a mixed bag. The songs sound like a logical step from Feathers, but now we see more angular country inspired twangs and stops and starts, less meandering solos and more "riffs", if you can call them that, instead of swirling, winding passages. Their solos, regardless how much they have changed tone-wise, are still mesmerizing. The rhythm section sounds tighter then ever. There's a cool energy to these songs, which is a nice change of pace from the sometimes too lazy songs of the past. ($33.99)

Even when the words are world weary, there's lift in the music. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Fred Laird calls this "a farewell to our more obvious space rock leanings, instead we have drunk deep from the well of visionaries such as Syd Barrett, Todd Rundgren, Kevin Ayers and John Cale. Not to mention our increasing obsession with the seven classic Utopian albums that the Moody Blues created from '67-72." That they wrestle a wriggling approximation of their lofty influences armed only with their trusty 24-track porta-studio, "hell-bent on recording in every warehouse, kitchen and toilet," is extra impressive. Much like Austin, Texas' Amplified Heat, El Cuy relies on a classic "Plug in, turn it up, and kick out the jams" blues-rock mentality. It's nothing too fancy or out of the ordinary but damn if it doesn't deliver. Songs shuffle, boogie, groove, and just plain get down. Overall, El Cuy sounds like the type of band that can play a venue only once before getting banned for life for causing too much drunken mayhem. And frankly speaking, that's how it ought to be done. If the song titles didn't give it away, the whole thing's sung in Spanish, but that doesn't really matter. Rock's a universal language and El Cuy's fluent. ($26.99)

Includes 2 massive bonus tracks! Deluxe gatefold sleeve! Superbly remastered for vinyl! These sound amazing! Click here to check out the video (on YouTube) for Endless Drifting Wreck. It's a brainmelter! 'A Wound In Eternity' owes as much to Hawkwind as it does to Sleep, and at times the sound reminds me of early Monster Magnet. This is a fuzzed-out, spacey freak-out. The drums pound along in a manner that would make Keith Moon and John Bonham both proud. The guitars are fuzzed-out and drenched in reverb and delay, providing an excellent ambience. The vocals easily hearken back to the 60's/early 70's. Lyrics about space and all things space-related abound throughout the whole disc. Everything in the mix has a place here and it all sets a great psychedelic tone without sounding dated or forced. Farflung is a band with one foot firmly in the past and the other set light years into the future. I can only hope that this is just the beginning of a long trip yet to come. ($20.99)

Not that it's like cuddling with a furry animal listening to Fistula. It's more like the slowest jackhammer ever, slowly penetrating your skull, reaching your brain and fiddling around with your nerves and emotions. It's so extremely heavy and brutal, but seriously slow (and almost drone-like at times). The slow, repetitive riffing you'll get acquainted with is sure to bury itself in your mind, and slowly start to peel away your inner defense. And before you know it you'll claw yourself to bits, trying to peel off your own skin to climb out of yourself. 'Cause to tell you the truth, this is almost hurtful to hear, but in an oh-so-marvelous manner. ($11.99)

Most of the songs are odes to drinking, but they're as tastefully done as songs about drinking can be. Nothing seems forced or too silly. The entire LP finds the band cooking like they never have before. The thing that really makes this album work for me is an early ZZ Top feel. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something akin to that little ol' band from Texas. Maybe it's the sound of a blues band hitting their stride and becoming one of my favorites in the process. ($22.99)

Though this one-man project ostensibly falls within doom's murky sphere it manages to cut through a variety of subterranean genres with a cold blade, effectively providing a cross section of all things dour and gloomy. The first thing you'll notice are the trudging atonal riffs and unearthly rasps, but closer inspection reveals wisps of industrial static, droning melancholy and vague traces of forgotten folk, suggesting that while a debt may well be owed to the likes of Burning Witch and Thergothon, the album's creator is also more than au fait with the further-flung territory mapped out by the likes of Gnaw Their Tongues, Coil and Nadja. Though this one-man project ostensibly falls within doom's murky sphere it manages to cut through a variety of subterranean genres with a cold blade, effectively providing a cross section of all things dour and gloomy. The first thing you'll notice are the trudging atonal riffs and unearthly rasps, but closer inspection reveals wisps of industrial static, droning melancholy and vague traces of forgotten folk, suggesting that while a debt may well be owed to the likes of Burning Witch and Thergothon, the album's creator is also more than au fait with the further-flung territory mapped out by the likes of Gnaw Their Tongues, Coil and Nadja. Includes four bonus tracks! Doremi Fasol Latido is the godfather of grunge and punk all filtered through acid fuelled mixing at the desk and the powerhouse rhythm of Simon King and Lemmy. It wouldn't have had prog rock status in 1972 - Hawkwind were the darker end of the spectrum. This is a black album with the paranoia of "Brainstorm" the isolation of "Down Through the Night" and warning from "The Watcher". But it has unique qualities that influenced many bands to come. The music on The Eclectic Measure consists of a variety of different elements from numerous genres. When I first listened to the disc, I heard an indie, neo-psych thing going on similar to the band Comets on Fire with a little less of a punk influence. The more that I listen to the album, the more prog I hear. There's loads of mellotron on here. At times they seem to be channeling the spirit of Änglagård, a band they probably haven't even heard. There's also quite a nice jazz element to the music brought on by the liberal sax and clarinet involvement. ($14.99)

Al Morris has been coming up with some of the best riffs in Doom Metal for over 20 years now and with this new Iron Man album, nothing has changed. In fact, he may have got even better with age. While known as a Doom Metal band, Iron Man offer up a musical package that older fans of Heavy Metal will also really appreciate. One of the first things that hits you with this album is the incredible production. There is not one weak track, no stale riffs and every tune on here is catchy as hell. One of those albums you listen to once and already the tunes are stuck in your head. Comparisions for those people who have never heard them, well even though their name comes from the famous Sabbath tune they are actually closer to Pentagram than anybody else. This is album of the year so far for me. ($19.99)

Israthoum's black metal has enough reference points to make any listener instantly comfortable, but feels varied, creative and passionate. The Necromorbus sound was a perfect choice, with the guitars kept hard-edged, churning and creepy, the bass high and the vocals absolutely feral. If you were looking to take a chance on an unknown black metal band, I would wholly recommend you scout out this album – chaotic, harsh and dark, it won't fail to please. ($17.99)

Here is just the case to recall all those wonderful feelings. "Blues from Hellah" possesses everything necessary to be loved by you. This album is a superb masterpiece. ($17.99)

Performing a style of hard rock with proggy influences that was perhaps last popular in the 1970s, Lucifer Was pay no heed to the passage of time. As far as time between formation and debut album release goes, this must surely rank as a world record, as Lucifer Was gigged in the Oslo area before calling it a day in 1974, only to reform and release their debut album in 1997! The Divine Tree is their fourth album, and apart from a stronger and more lucid production than would have been the case in the '70s, there is no concession to anything that happened during their hibernation. It is a rather varied album: the first track features a flute, immediately evoking comparisons with Jethro Tull, whilst the use of a harmonica on the following track imbues it with a bluesy feel and "The First Mover" is an obligatory power ballad. The record is a rather mixed bag, strung together by engaging compositions and the endearing vocals. ($17.99)

What I hear in Lucifer Was is English proto-doom. They've got a distinct late '60's/early '70's style. So while Lucifer Was lean towards the heavy, they still have a hippie sensibility. This gives their songs a storyteller vibe, as if the band is saying, "Gather round the campfire, my children, and I'll tell you the story of a man. A man with the legs of a goat!" Underground and Beyond is, to say the least, an interesting album. Imagine if Spinal Tap and The Folksman from A Mighty Wind were combined, stripped of the comedy, and given the integrity of early Pentagram, and you'll have something akin to Lucifer Was. ($17.99)

Psychedelia from every stripe infuses Marble Sheep's two newest efforts, Green and Purple. Each CD is intended to display a different side to the band. There is a noticeable difference in approach between the two discs, but they have more in common than not: this is Psychedelic Rock, with emphasis on both words. Purple, the "rock" album, is naturally the more accessible of the two, and it's a monster. If Purple is a rock album with psych touches, then Green is a psych album with a rock spine, taking the same building blocks and using them to different ends. By pulling back on the verse-chorus-verse of Purple, Marble Sheep take on a looser but overall heavier feel, one that lets the band's raw power as a unit take precedence. While the two albums were clearly made together, they nonetheless cohere as two distinct entities. ($29.99)

They are one of rocks most unknown gems. Mr. Chris Goss heads up this project...he also produced the Queens "Rated R" released last year. The latest "Deep in the Hole" is nothing short of exceptional. Call of the Mastodon is Lifesblood plus four other tracks. Seeing how Lifesblood is out of print, that's not too bad a deal for those who came to the party late and want to see how the band's evolved. Besides, the songs have been remastered and the movie samples that preceded the songs have been removed. Of those Lifesblood's songs, "Hail to Fire" and "Battle at Sea" are the best. With these two songs, you can hear the inspiration for Remission and Leviathan. I'm surprised that some of the other tracks, such as "Deep Sea Creature," "Slickleg," and "Call of the Mastodon," weren't originally included on the EP, as they strike me as being more developed. Call of the Mastodon is an interesting album as it shows how it all began, and in the context of their two full-lengths, how their style has become more refined with each release. ($13.99)

A Trip To Purpleland: The Early Years Live features performances from two 1989 shows and is a testament to what a great live band Purple Overdose were. These are classic free your mind and float away psychedelic songs with killer instrumentation and lots of jam segments. And we hear in abundance how the band exceled at diverging from the basic songs into instrumental exploration. Lots of great tripped out guitar and organ excursions. Graham is known for his textural tone as well as his involvement in Neurosis and Battle of Mice. This helped Red Sparowes in the past as the metal edge was beefed up in part because of Graham. On "Aphorisms" we can feel the change of sound yet it doesn't come off as a bad one. Red Sparowes have just grown a little lighter as well as a little more rhythm based. This change may have nothing to do with the departure of Graham but whatever the reason "Aphorisms" is a great EP showcasing Red Sparowes evolving sound. Drummer David Clifford provides a dynamically interesting performance that helps blend the soft and loud changes effortlessly. Guitarists Bryant Meyer and Andy Arahood create gorgeous melodies that echo traces of math rock complexities. The band has honed in the lengths of their songs and put a more prominent effort in being a little more emotionally and it pays off in heaps. ($15.99)

Much of the same affinities for Pentagram and Sabbath remain, yet a decided air of DiAnno-era Iron Maiden lurks all about Valley of the Kings though still relayed at a predominantly creeping, mid-tempo pace. Another distinction to Valley of the Kings is Gypsy Re Bethe's affinity to tug and twang his guitar notes with bleeding sorrow on every song to the point of replication. Was he in a genuine blue period as of this album? Certainly there's a wrenching emotional encapsulation to Re Bethe's playing on Valley of the Kings, even when he whips out a complex solo on the pulsing "Kiss of the Nile." Nevertheless, you're going to have to acclimate yourself to hearing repeated high-note slides and prolonged squeals to the point you think Re Bethe is weeping flush down his tearful frets. Ritual's minute place in heavy metal is now revealed as nearly-silent practitioners of doom and precursory ambient metal. Valley of the Kings is mostly an instant-grab. ($13.99)

Robot Lords of Tokyo attack with an arsenal of thick and mighty riffs. They call upon the power of heavy Sabbath inspired sludge and relentlessly unleash it like a blast of fire upon your unsuspecting ears. This is a combination of early 70's classic metal, stoner rock, doom and just some real spine-rattling might. Think Sabbath swirled in with Clutch, Fireball Ministry and Sheavy and you get a good idea of where this band is coming from. The vocals are deep and powerful while the music relies on a raw and simple approach. The sound might be more deeply influenced by real metal than other modern stoner acts. In a way they draw on aspects of heavy music from every decade from the 70's on, yet they manage to control it and make it their own. Like label mates Colour Haze Gas Giant, and Hypnos 69, Rotor are adept at crafting beautiful epic jams, well versed in the stoner rock tradition. Rotor show their strength lies in jazzy, free-flowing rock, sort of like if Karma to Burn did too much peyote and recorded their own version of (Welcome to) Sky Valley. There's an indelible sense of groove to their playing, yet the songs are structured in an almost prog-rock fashion. Nothing matches the instrumental work on 2. Those six tracks keep offering something new with each listen. Rotor's 2 is a great psychedelic fuzz rock album. Recommended. ($14.99)

Roel (guitar) and Jelle Stevens (drums) craft heavy dirges that are all about The Riff. Their debut displays a love for amplifier tones and vintage Sabbath grooves. Black Cobra, Weedeater, and High on Fire comparisons are unavoidable, but the music is so immediate you can't process anything until after they're done hammering your skull. The absence of vocals allow a deeper, more Neitzchian listening experience wherein the abyss stares back at you. My sole complaint is that there aren't enough songs on here. This is the best first effort I've heard in a while. ($12.99)

Features Chris Smith of Keelhaul! Includes a track not found on the LP version! Terminal Lovers are definitely psychedelic guitar rock, but most of the time it is a bit more than just that. The intro track on the album sets an almost misleading pace at first by demonstrating just how good those guitar chops are with a Judas Priest/Iron Maiden approach and viscous heavy attack. At other times these guys get as melodic and hard rock/pop as Big Elf. Not that the whole album is pop rock/metal either, there is plenty of acid rock jams along with meticulous and intricate song writing. Terminal Lovers like to throw in super heavy psychedelic songs in there that are trance and weird. Lots of variety including acoustic styled numbers and busy bass reminding me of late 70's Floyd, Velvet Underground and even the mellower Monster Magnet stuff at times. Fans of Gallery of Mites might dig on this equally because of the songwriting style. Get this one if you like everything psychedelic and guitar heavy. ($9.99)

Trouble may have gone through their share of bassists and drummers, but the guitar duo of Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin has remained intact and churning out some seriously damaging sludge since their self-titled debut back in 1984. Trouble does the midtempo throb grooves as well as Corrosion of Conformity or Monster Magnet, but they're versatile enough to pick up the pace when necessary. They even include covers of Carole King's "Porpoise Song" and the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" that suitably honor the original versions--though the heavy-handed psychedelic flair is pure Trouble. The trio specializes in sweeping instrumentals that are as much in tune with the ocean as they are with the desert.
