Given that this Austin five-piece cribbed it's name from the Velvet Underground, it's not surprising that they pay such homage to Lou Reed and Co with their full-length debut. What is surprising is how well they've done it. Passover has that sparse, almost trance-like hippy rock. It's not quite languid, but it never really has an immediate push. Instead, the songs slowly but surely crawl under your skin, hypnotizing you with their '60's rock influenced, opium den inspired grooves. There's something really subtly captivating about Passover. For fans of the Velvet Underground, early Floyd, Hawkwind, Black Mountain, Lord Sterling, and for those who need a soundtrack to their fever dreams. ($22.99)

Limited edition of only 500 copies on green vinyl. "Brain Cycles," the band's sophomore recording displays the kind of heavy psychedelic, blues jams their parents or possibly their parents' parents would have smoked grass and jammed out to in the late 60s or early 70s. At a mere twenty-three-years old, guitarist/vocalist Parker Griggs is the oldest member of the band, so this guy's only connection to the early years of heavy blues jam would be through recordings. However, Radio Moscow does not sound like a Johnny-come-lately to this scene. Radio Moscow is primarily the creation of Parker Griggs. Griggs handles guitar, vocals, drums and percussion, and does it with exceptional skill. Zach Anderson provides groovin' bass lines. Each track on "Brain Cycles" features mellow vocals, heavy-yet-bluesy riffs, jazzy drum fills and hazy psychedelics. ($15.99)

Mastered from the original tapes. This is the story of a band whose tragic legacy could never have been predicted. Possessed were born out the thriving underground West Midlands Rock and Blues scene of the mid to late 60s. This was a scene in which band- leader, Vernon Pereira, had been a key figure. The band were formed in late 1969 when Vernon teamed up (after a spell playing next to Robert Plant in The Band Of Joy) with Mick Reeves, who had been playing in (amongst other bands) Sugarstack with Al Atkins. This was the band that would eventually evolve into being the first incarnation of Judas Priest. Exploration was originally intended for releases in 1971. Due to various reasons the album never saw the light of day. The band were finally on the verge of signing a major deal, when tragedy struck. Whilst returning home from a gig in 1976, the band's van drove into a stationary tanker, taking the lives of three band members. ($18.99)

The psychedelic stoner rock band, Mountain of Judgement, was formed back in 2003 by Scott Cune (bass), Dave Easter (drums), Scott Isenhour (synthesizers) and Chad Davis (guitar, vocals, synthesizers). The recordings which make up this album began back in 2005 but were only completed by Davis last year. As for why it took so long to get this one out to the masses, well Davis' other band U.S. Christmas had a lot to do with it. Fast forwarding to 2009, the other members have gone their separate ways and Davis is left holding the bag (ok, pun intended). He re-recorded the drums himself and re-tooled some of the arrangements and here are the results that celebrate the almighty power of the riff. ($12.99)

My favorite doom band was Yob prior to this discovery. Since Yob is now defunct, I done got myself a new favorite. These guys from Finland sure figured out the right formula. This is basically a doom album with death metal vocals. In fact, when the band stumbled across their sound, they were vamping on Candlemass with death vocals. They were diggin' it so much they decided to roll with it. There is no single riff, bury you with boredom type doom here. These guys are evil, cavernous, and display a perfect portrayal of the doom sound that has been lurking in my subconscious desires. It's really not that complicated… killer riffs expanding with drums that are solid and dynamic as well. The production is clean enough to display all the nuances and dark enough to be doom done right. EVERY track is solid and crushing. I have listened to this album about 6 times in the last two days and it just keeps getting more badass. ($11.99)

Decrepitaph: Beyond the Cursed Tombs (CD) http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.asp?item_num=ATH-6982

Decrepitaph is an interesting band, hailing from Texas, but sounding much more akin to the crude death metal of the earlier European scene. With a numbing, full bodied guitar tone that reminds of old Entombed, but a pacing that often crawls more along the Bolt Thrower path, Beyond the Cursed Tombs is a solid followup to their 2008 debut Condemned Cathedral. Beyond the Cursed Tombs is a very well rounded, complete experience which successfully bridges the narrow gap between classic, morbid horror and gut busting, classic death metal, which if you can remember, used to thrive on its frightening tones and implications rather than the technical Olympics it has begun to sate the attention spans of the competitive and short fused younger generations. Not perfect, but if Texas is ever to produce a Left Hand Path or Mental Funeral, my money is on Decrepitaph as the author. ($11.99)

Limited edition of only 500 copies in a DVD case. Man, I like my doom metal slow and raw, but this is some jagged shit. The production is kinda Steve Albini if he spent most of the recording budget on downers, with the drums nice and spacey but the guitars are left to sink deep into a bog. Due to this nasty production, I can only understand maybe 1/8th of the riffs on this album, but surprisingly that doesn't take away from its baddassitude. Reminds me a little of Facedowninshit, but heavier and with more punk agression. The tempos vacillate from groovy downtempo to full blown d-beat punk. Great album to throw on if you're in a shitty mood and happen to have a fifth of Evan Williams on hand. ($12.99)

Beast In The Field is a two man band of epic proportions. This guitar and drums duo uses around three or four vintage amps and six or eight cabs simultaneously to get their point across. Their point consists of stoner doom of the super loud, riffy, and sometimes psychedelic brand. ($8.99)

Delxue gatefold sleeve. Guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner, guitarist Michael Gallagher, and guitarist/keyboardist Bryant Clifford Meyer weave beautiful tapestries with dizzy space rock melodies. Bassist Jeff Caxide and drummer Aaron Harris establish the beach on which the guitars flood and recede. To push the metaphor a step further, the sand equally shaped by the waves, slowly eroding and taking new unanticipated forms. Isis is still ethereal. The new album is darker than previous endeavors. Wavering Radiant succeeds in pairing the brutality and economy of Celestial with the dreamscapes of In the Absence of Truth. ($41.99)

Contrary to what most first-time listeners might expect based on the band's reputation as American doom pioneers, Saint Vitus were hardly all about indolence and sloth when it came to their songwriting. The chorus is catchy and the classic groove is there, and that pretty much sets the stage for the whole album. All in all, it's not quite as heavy or powerful as their classic '80's albums, but the songwriting is friggin' spot on. Eric Wagner simply has never sounded better. Whenever the songs adopt elements that might have sounded like rock cliches if attempted by other bands, Wagner steps right up to the plate and blows you away with his pipes. The guitars also deliver some righteous harmonies, and provide other melodic bends and turns to help mix things up as well. This is a mature album from an obviously seasoned band of veterans whose music gels perfectly into a focused and powerful album. ($24.99)

Formerly known as the band, Totem. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Jex Thoth goes back to the nursery of heavy rock, the time when acid had nothing to do with dance music and long songs were divided into chapters. Did I hear somebody shout out Witch rather loudly? That's OK, that somebody might have a point. There are plenty of similarities: we see a group of indie musicians who like to play retro-doom / hardrock and hear a guitar player who knows his way around with the wahwah pedal. Both bands are keen to show us they know their music-history. Of course there are differences as well. Jex Thoth succeeds where Witch tries. The singer's voice will not be everyone's taste, but if you like it, you have a 50 minute long maelstrom of pure, heavy psychedelic rock, with a green and purple, strangely wavy border. What was in that sugarcube anyway? ($17.99)

Limited editon of only 300 copies on translucent red vinyl. Spiritus Mortis is perhaps the oldest doom band of Finland, hailing way back from 1987! New since a year or so is Sami, better known as Lord Albert of Reverend Bizarre, perhaps Finland's late but greatest doom export product. Others might know him from bands like Armanenschaft, Azrael Rising, The Candles Burning Blue, KLV, Lohja SS, March 15, Opium Warlords, Orne, Punisment or The Puritan. Remarkably the EP opens with a cover of Uriah Heep. 'Sunrise' is more than an own adaptation of that song and a bit unusual to listen to. No, Sami feels more at home singing songs lik 'The Ceremony Of Stifling Air' or the sublime 'Rise From Hell'. Good production and heavy songs! But in all Fall Of The Idols leaves a better impression with the more American injected doom metal in songs like 'Funeral Man' or the mysterious, sad and melancholic Nick Cave like sung 'Stalker". What's great about Fall Of The Idols is the addition of great solos and choir singing. A fine doom record. ($16.99)

What Droids Attack have on their third album is a successful meshing of solid, thick riff rock with an engaging, friendly mood. I don't know if I'd vote them for president, but I'd definitely have a beer with these dudes, even if I had to go to cold-ass Wisconsin to do it. In the meantime, drinking by myself and listening to Must Destroy will do just fine. Recommended for anyone not afraid of enjoying themselves. ($11.99)

The crux of SubArachnoid Space is psychedelic space rock that flirts with the progressive, but never to the point where an individual song's theme is lost. It's fancy, sure, but never obtusely so. Eight Bells is at turns simplistic, bombastic, uplifting, and dour, a spiraling, sprawling journey of sound. Given the turnover ratio of the band, the constant obviously remains Jackson's guitar work. She's as effective with just a few notes as she is with a flurry of them. Like 5ive, 35007, and Stinking Lizaveta, SubArachnoid Space creates music that's texture-based, like the musical equivalent of a Jackson Pollack painting. The first listen isn't going to give you the whole picture; neither will the tenth. ($23.99)

I am convinced that Psycho Erectus will certainly appeal to certain progressive rock fans, especially those that are into the small world of RIO, Canterbury scène and other experimental rock. The arrival of this album in my record collection has given the Black Keys a scare, pushing in on their listening time to an almost dangerous degree. I was greeted with a swaggering deep rock track that blew half the cars in my neighborhood up into the air. "Laywayed" does not fuck around people. You can almost feel the power and resistance of the music, it's so thick it takes a few seconds for it to come out of the speakers. This gives way to the body of the album which feels like I'm sitting at the crossroads drinking bourbon and dropping acid with Morphine, Alice In Chains and Pink Floyd. The solo work on this album pierces the gloom of this southern Gothic acid trip like the headlights of a car on a dark country night. If you're ever feeling sexually repressed, I prescribe a healthy dose of Pontiak to get you through the night. ($16.99)

Three brothers holed up in rural Virginia recall the Black Angels, Black Mountain, Mogwai, and Neil Young on this seven-song debut. Like those musicians, Pontiak brings ideas into their crafting of meandering, punchy, exploratory tunes that roam the crossroads of muddy rather than anthemic Southern rock, early-70s folk-rock, experimental indie rock, and classic late-60s AOR. If the band (the samples I've previewed of their recent follow-up "Maker" seems to progress into an Om-stoner metal-art rock epic guitar dissonance) continues to reconstruct classic sounds into intelligent and unexpected structures, they should gain as wide a following as some of the influences I mentioned here. They deserve wider attention. ($16.99)

While they bring the '70s to mind like Astra, Barn Burner does it in a very different way. Rather than bringing smooth progressive rock to mind with its atmospheric excess, Barn Burner brings us straight-up rock and roll with a southern twist. The music sounds as if it has been soaked in a bottle of Tennessee whiskey that was then smashed across a vintage Marshall stack with a mid-1960s Gibson SG or Les Paul connected through a fuzz box. The sort of music that will play well at a smoke-filled bar where the beer and the Jack flow freely. This is groove-based rock with memorable riffs, moderately paced turns that you can sit back and rock your head to without spilling your drink. Touches of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, a little bit of Black Sabbath, a liberal sprinkle of Thin Lizzy, a side dish of Iron Maiden, perhaps a smidgen of punk, and a dash of Corrosion of Conformity for a more recent frame of reference and you get an idea of what Barn Burner is like. The Australian outfit's demo took the traditional doom world by storm, and the full length expands on their established sounds - Iommian guitar tones, somber and sprawling songs, pounding rhythms, and soaring female vocals. This is a classic debut, with great songs that are carried by stirring and powerful melodies, firmly rooted in the metal and doom traditions, and yet it has a sound all of its own. That's the recipe for a winner in my book, and Rituals of the Oak are certainly a band to watch. ($39.99)

The common admiration and respect for acts like Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and Candlemass, have been the base to create a doom monster and now Warchetype have become one of the most respected bands in the Spanish underground. The three band members play an equal part forging a dark and deathly sound. While Nicklas Rudolfsson breaks off one churning riff or baleful doom-like lead after another, Mojjo Moilanen and Emma Rudolfsson provide a powerful rhythm section that is the album's strongest connection to the band's former sound. The extensive use of otherworldly synths to create the mood was already becoming a part of Runemagick's fearsome apothecary; not only does the album begin with an instrumental dedicated to these effects, but some of the vicious chugging sections are overlaid with submarine-sounding keyboard patterns that increase the suffocating atmosphere. An exceptional album that would maul the fuck out of most death/ doom or pure death metal released. ($12.99)

This is good solid doom. It wanders along like a fat man in size 12 steel toe cap boots, heavy hitting in its own plodding way, pounding out solid rhythms as it walks the dark Scandinavian wilds wrapped in thin coat of runic mystery. Metaphor aside, there are some lovely riffs on here. The pace is steady, we're not looking at funeral doom here, but big heavy thunderous riffs stomp at your ears, and they're helped massively by solid doom production. ($12.99)

I once read somewhere that the members of the band consider their music to be experiments in creating soundscapes. This is a very fitting description. They are bold in their presentation, daring in their creativity and epic in their vision. Close your eyes and you can feel the earth shake and see the mighty Cthulhu rise out of the ocean's depths. Fascinating and ambient soundscapes, yes. But also plenty of great riffs and hooks. A perfect blend of old school doom with more modern experimental forays. ($12.99)

Although the initial idea was just to record an EP, the nature of Nicklas and Emma's partnership (they also live as a couple) allows ideas to be spontaneously demoed and recorded. The unexpected use of female vocals evidences the experimental mood in the Rudolfsson studio at the time, as do the programmed drums, menacing chants and black metal riffs. ($12.99)

Mountain High, from Philadelphia, and Loving Thunder, a Seattle-based two-piece, each offer up one song that's straight forward 70's rock and one that has a strong affinity for Devo-esque synth pop. The rock songs, "Night Tremors" and "Magic Wand," respectively, are both solid numbers, hinting at the prog but overall simple and direct and full of shaggy-hair riffs. "Downhill Champion" and "Liferider," on the other hand, are peppy and danceable, yet still imbibed with the same characteristics of the bands' other offerings. ($5.99)

Limited edition on blue colored vinyl. Missoula, Montana's heavy new wave dance force. Prick up ears, people, Volumen handle bent pop music like no others. This record runs the gamut with hits like "Sexy Astronaut" and "Snakes" and bizarre progressive epics like "Daddy's Other Finger". Volumen remind me of the best Ricky Wilson/B-52s subtlety, the Cars' band dynamics and something spastic and endearing that's all their own. Tim Green recorded this dance/prog jihad. ($11.99)

Cleveland's This Moment In Black History has been repping the mistake by the lake by kicking out torrential jams for the past seven years.
