Limited edition of only 4000 copies on 180gr. black vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. I had not heard anything like this album before this disc started spinning in my CD-player. Think SLEEP without drums and vocals goin' at it in an extremely slow pace. This album is filled with lots of low-end ambience and it seems like the music has been recorded in layer after layer after layer. ($23.99)

North Carolina's Sourvein finally achieve the feedback-drenched sludge greatness they've approached with previous releases. A wonderfully raw production amplifies the awesomeness of slow-burners like "Holy Transfusion" and "Society's Blood." But Sourvein—who once boasted Electric Wizard's Liz Buckingham among their ranks—are even better when they pick up the pace, like on the raging and unhinged "Nomadic." What really makes them so good, however, is how they've nailed the sludge attitude: throughout the album, the band sounds ugly and prickly, like old gizzards creaking out of their cave, squinting at daylight and cursing everyone's name. Remasterd from the original tapes. Includes two LPs two bonus 7 inches and a 12 page LP sized booklet. Mellow Candle were an Irish band from the post-psychedelic era that produced but this one album, which went sadly unacknowledged in its initial release. Over the years, though, Mellow Candle's sole LP garnered cult status, making it an eventual heavy hitter among British folk-rock collectors, who were content to pay considerable sums of money for mint copies, if the liner notes for the CD are to be believed. In any case, there are two reasons to get Swaddling Songs, neither of them inconsiderable. ($64.99)

The somewhat lethargic and unintelligible vocals are augmented in places by the aforementioned spoken word samples which lean to The Dark Side of the Moon as a blueprint. Amidst all the hooky psych freaking you get boot-kicking go-go dance, stoner elements, and even a bit of Chicago blues shuffle. The instrumentation is varied, with appearances by eastern percussion, squiggly electronics, backwards tape effects, some Theremin style elements, and last but not least, the obligatory sitar and organ. The band have often spoken of the earth, literal and metaphorical, as a primary musical influence, and it shows in their washed out, earthy music: the songs fairly reek of soil and sediment, the odor of rain and pine needles. Some of the riffs are so rustic, they're only a slide guitar and a twang away from alt-country, and the growls of old are largely supplanted by folksy singing provided by Dwayne Boardman and Gary Griffith. The four tracks on Electric Moon's Flaming Lake are a bit like staring into the raw nebular elements of creation — just extended jams, recorded live by guitarist Dave "Sula Bassana" Schmidt. Everything is unpolished, everything sounds made up on the spot. It's fantastically spontaneous and freaked way the hell out. ($34.99)

A set recorded in their hometown at the venue for which the album is named on Nov. 14, 2009, Festsaal Kreuzberg affirms the chemistry that has developed over the last decade-plus between the three members of Rotor. The nine tracks draw exclusively from 3 and 4 and sound crisp and clear but still definitively live, and the whole of Festsaal Kreuzberg has an organic flow that matches well the band's balance between progressive structuring and riff-based heaviness. Fans and followers of Rotor who've never had the chance to see them live probably won't find the whole of the experience replicated here – never having seen them (yet), I can't say for sure either way – but for an instrumental band who has always shown it's the music that matters, the music continues to be what matters on Festsaal Kreuzberg. Their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than its parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It's all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the '60s and mid-'70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips' music is modern and in every way their own. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. New Album, to put it plainly, is a sheer joy to listen to. Oddly enough, it could easily be described as the band's "pop album," featuring chilled melodies, uplifting beats, and short and quick bursts of saccharine coated gooey pop goodness. Have no fear, while on the surface it lacks that heavy Boris feel, the impetuous charm still rises to the top. After all, Boris always bring the quirky and off-kilter in spades, and New Album exemplifies that fact, magnifying it to an obscene amount. ($28.99)

Danava have always been able to separate themselves from other Iommi-inspired retro rockers by infusing an unabashed weirdness into all that they do. Hemisphere of Shadows, the Portland band's third full length and first since 2008's UnonoU, is no exception, and, in fact, the addition of a second guitarist (Andrew Forgash) means the blitzkrieg of riffs are now twined-out to inflict a maximum assault of strange. With a much shorter run-time than previous albums and a decidedly tighter focus, Hemisphere of Shadows finds Danava reigning in their druggy psych-metal jams without strangling them, and without stripping them of their cosmic, downer, prog, and occult flourishes. It's not that they've completely changed their methodology so much as they've shifted the balance within their sound. These structural elements were certainly present on Long-Distance Trip, but a cut like the semi-acoustic "Thirsty Moon" shows that Samasara Blues Experiment are able to work within these parameters to grow their songwriting. One gets the sense in listening to opener "Flipside Apocalypse" that this process is just beginning and that the band are still finding out what they want their sound to be, but that only makes Revelation and Mystery a more immediate, direct experience; the linearity of the album unfolding gradually as the songs move from the straightforward into the more sublimely jammed. Color vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. As can be heard, Death of a Country was a highly impressive debut album. The band have said that the two strongest influences on their early sound were The Beatles and Black Sabbath, and that potent combination - melody and power, subtlety and aggression - was apparent on pretty much all of the material. 'My Window' and 'Certainly Meaningless' were beguiling slices of post-psychedelic hard rock, with the latter featuring accomplished vocal harmonies as well as some cryptic lyrics that lived up to the song's title. 'No Trespassing' and 'Life On Ending' both showcased the band's enviable lightness of touch, with some blasting Tony Iommi-style riffs incorporated seamlessly into what were essentially tender hard rock ballads. Album closer 'Future Song' was another fascinating creation, with the band moving convincingly into the same space-rock territory as Hawkwind and early Pink Floyd. ($31.99)

Like so many early '70s bands, the three-piece London-based group Incredible Hog were a by-product of the '60s British Blues Boom. In an attempt to mix melodic pop with heavy rock and intelligent, meaningful lyrics, guitarist/vocalist Ken Gordon and bassist Jim Holmes formed Incredible Hog in early 1972. The name is a play on the then highly popular 'Incredible Hulk' comic book series. Their Volume 1 album (originally released in 1973), has gone on be heralded as a cult classic of proto metal meets heavy glam/blues rock. ($36.99)

Influences range from Amon Duul and Can on the one hand to a psychedelicious take on the Santana, Allman Brothers, and early Deep Purple stylings. ($28.99)

This album is a UFO created by cosmic riffs that have the power to elevate your mind and spirit to other planes of existence. At times, Whitehorse makes me feel like I'm meditating with the demons in the dark places of my mind. The vocals on this album are blackened to the max and sound very poisonous. ($17.99)

With their minimalistic track titles, organically-evolving song structures and many mood shifts, it is scarcely appropriate to attempt a track-by-track analysis of Stundum. While there are thundering riffs and soaring wah-wah passages, it is by no means all sturm und drang, with numerous atmostheric break-down passages and even elements of Czukay/Liebzeit rhythm-section funkiness. From the opening cymbal crashes, locked bass grooves and soaring guitar of Sunday #1 to the ambient drones of (relatively) brief epilogue Tuesday #2, there are simply no boring bits on Stundum. Neither is there any sign of overblown histrionic pretension. However, there is plenty of enormous, and brilliantly executed, psychedelic guitar rock which demands frequent and repeated listening. For me, Papir are strong contenders for discovery of the year, and their album will likely receive regular block-bookings on my player. I can hardly wait for the follow-up! ($35.99)

While many '70s inspired stoner bands with a grunge component shift more towards the alternative rock in their development, Thalamus is going back to their early roots. The debut album 'Beneath A Dying Sun' was a mix of The Quill, Spiritual Beggars and Soundgarden, with some basic elements of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. This next album 'Subterfuge' contains a decreasing influence of the '90s, replaced by more Blue Cheer and Cream-like stuff, which is a sound maybe even more fitting for the guys. This is an absolute must for everyone into high-quality heavy, '70s inspired rock with balls. ($17.99)

Italian power trio Johnfish Sparkle bring the blues-rock and riffs on their second outing, Flow. Falling in line with recent releases by label-mates Gordon Fights and Jeremy Irons and the Ratgang Malibus, with the more progressive elements toned down, Flow is pretty much a straight-up rock outing with one toe in the '70s pool and another in the here and now. These structural elements were certainly present on Long-Distance Trip, but a cut like the semi-acoustic "Thirsty Moon" shows that Samasara Blues Experiment are able to work within these parameters to grow their songwriting. One gets the sense in listening to opener "Flipside Apocalypse" that this process is just beginning and that the band are still finding out what they want their sound to be, but that only makes Revelation and Mystery a more immediate, direct experience; the linearity of the album unfolding gradually as the songs move from the straightforward into the more sublimely jammed. Rue from Akron, Ohio are quite the achievers and one of the best kept secrets of the underground heavy music scene. The first full length came out in 2003 so this a long-time coming but the wait has been worth it, this is a great album. When you look at tracks like "Stargasm", the Title Track and "Bedazzled Fingernails" you recognise the spacey timbre that was present on Crack The Skye, and Sci-Fi horror elements that would have fit in nicely with the downright weird storyline that was explored on Crack The Skye. Tracks like "Black Tongue", which are finally given a context, seem like more of a throwback to the doom-style riffage of Crystal Skull, rather than a risky delving into Trivium-style two-part guitar harmonies over chugging power chords; a formula that has been well flogged over the years and is as boring now as it sounds. A way cool split involving three unsigned Finnish bands that explore and interpret sludge in different ways. Although, they share the ability of building up walls of monster, molasse-like riffs as well as a common love for massive fuzz-driven groove: Demonic Death Judge, Semtex and Frogskin. Demonic Death Judge's sound is downtuned, dynamic, and only marginally sludgy, especially if compared with the other two bands. The tight, epic riffage leading the melodies in this band is simple and addictive and is continuously changing pace to keep the tension high. The heavy, catchy fuzzy riffs and the great thick bass are of Sabbathian memory, but in "Kneel", they are often played with a boost, as in a band like Goatsnake. ($12.99)

With the Demise of Greatdayforup, the core group of Mike Vitali and Brendan Slater began the arduous task of assembling a heavier, tighter band. The timely demise of another Albany favorite, Held Under, added to the mix, along with the addition of the exceptional vocal chords of Jeff Andrews. The considerable skills of second guitarist Ryan Rapp filled out the Ironweed sound , adding a mind-blowing new dimension to the titanic rock that these upsate New Yorkers make. Dan Dinsmore later joined behind the drums adding the final ingredient to Ironweed's powerhouse sound, just in time for "Your World Tomorrow". It reflects the band's heaviest efforts, and after 2008's "Indian Ladder" that's saying something. With nine brutal tracks in all, "Your World Tomorrow" is a sonic assault. Enron got in trouble for it. So did most of Wall Street. And while the art of Valley of the Serpent's Soul isn't exactly a federal offense, some may claim that it borders on deceptive practices. The skulls, dragons and warrior indicate a throwback to a retro-Dio style wail, high-tops, and a hesher type attitude. Make no mistake though, The Fucking Wrath is 100% pure ass-kicking beer-swilling rock-n-roll. Much like their contemporaries Saviours or Red Fang, The Fucking Wrath aren't reinventing the wheel on Valley of the Serpent's Soul, but it's hard to deny tracks with such raw swagger. With a crunchy guitar tone and cigarette-and-whiskey-damaged vocals, tracks like "The Question" make for the perfect soundtrack for a Harley, a fifth of Jack Daniels and a stretch of open road. Ok, here's some weird fuzzed-out stoner doom from Sweden's Saturnalia Temple. The vocals are all sorts of fucked up - haunted croons that are soaked in LSD and dripping with effects, and the whole shebang plays out like a deranged satanic ritual from a shitty 70's horror flick. "Brain Cycles," the band's sophomore recording displays the kind of heavy psychedelic, blues jams their parents or possibly their parents' parents would have smoked grass and jammed out to in the late 60s or early 70s. At a mere twenty-three-years old, guitarist/vocalist Parker Griggs is the oldest member of the band, so this guy's only connection to the early years of heavy blues jam would be through recordings. However, Radio Moscow does not sound like a Johnny-come-lately to this scene. Radio Moscow is primarily the creation of Parker Griggs. Griggs handles guitar, vocals, drums and percussion, and does it with exceptional skill. Zach Anderson provides groovin' bass lines. To me, Rwake has been the most consistent and under appreciated bands to hold the stoner/sludge title. Everything that they've released has given me a genuine sense of excitement. They haven't put out a sub par release to date but with Rest, they've managed to completely blow their back catalog out the water. Atmospheric sludge is a tricky genre to persevere in. Most bands manage to become stale quickly but Rwake are masters of their craft. They know when to keep it heavy and when to go light like it's their full time profession. ($14.99)

Out of Swansea comes these four guys and if you want to come along they can take you for a journey to the pleasure land. Bomb the Sun makes heavy trippy music for dreams or just for listening to with your eyes closed. This is nice complex soundscapes going on for ever and ever, but always varied with breaks and rhythm changes. Although it's a completely different style of music, this band reminds me of Colour Haze with the never ending ability to build upon the same riff and just progress forever. And like Colour Haze has Mani on drums, Bomb the Sun has Dave who can also do magic with the sticks. I'm overwhelmed, I'm flat on my back, this is a masterpiece. ($33.99)
