"Funeral doom is, in most appreciable ways, a niche within a niche. Forcing the listener to bear witness to a cripplingly slow march to oblivion is not, it must be said, the easiest way to win friends and influence people. Nevertheless, for those of us slavering pursuers of the deepest slow and darkest doom, the UK’s Esoteric has been churning out psychedelic funeral doom / death metal of unmatchable brilliance for nearly two decades. While the band is still a fiercely psychedelic trip through and through, with most of the songs summoning a towering groove to sink into and then ride out to its furthest possible limit and beyond (see “Cipher” in particular), sixth album Paragon Of Dissonance is undisputedly beautiful in a way that Esoteric has never before embraced so fully. Though this particular writer finds it difficult to over-enthuse about Esoteric, Paragon Of Dissonance just might be the band’s finest album yet, and easily stands as one of the most monstrously satisfying albums of the year."

Dan Obstkrieg

Subconscious Dissolution Into the Continuum (CD)

Label: Season of Mist   Origin: USA
Holy shit! If anyone out there loves doom in its most extreme form, buy this album immediately. Immense recording. Booming doom and pounding drums with swirling, psychedelic lead guitar, keyboards, and maniacal vocals. The sound a black hole would make if it dropped acid. The best album to get if you are unacquainted with Esoteric, who could very well be considered the "ultimate" doom band. A triumph of songwriting that produces music heavier than anything, yet fille...

The Maniacal Vale (2CD)

Label: Season of Mist   Origin: USA
The UK’s Esoteric have crafted a monolithic and disturbing work of art with The Maniacal Vale. I’d be hard pressed to name another album that rivals its sheer density, its suffocating power and despairing atmosphere. The sound here is quintessentially doom metal, with plodding guitars that scream and echo over unintelligible growls and slow, crashing percussion. Arpeggio riffs and ambient passages also lead to some psychedelic moments, adding to the expansive, swirling...

The Pernicious Enigma (2CD) (Import)

Label: Aesthetic Death   Origin: UK
The Pernicious Enigma is psychedelic, but not in the happy and groovy sense. The album resembles a bad acid trip, darkly hypnotic in its delivery. It is not an exaggeration to state that this album is literally physically unnerving and terrifyingly hallucinogenic. Esoteric is music that is clearly seething with misanthropic hatred, the nihilistic tendencies of which is backed up by the contorted genius of its members. If there ever was a band to succeed in chan...
