"Great dynamics, very emotive... huge monolithic riffs! It draws you right in... Seductive is a great way to say it."

"Odin and Thor have joined their forces and attack the sonic universe with a scorching blast of red hot metal eruptions. An extremely HEAVY slow, melodic and atmospheric type of metal that's loosely based on doom and sludge which includes some intimate vocals, but mostly bloody murder screams. The songs are like small symphonic poems; intimidating, mysterious and haunting that slowly evolves into a hellish nightmare of supernovas."

"The music sounds just a little bit more aggressive and direct than ‘Somewhere…’ and you also hear a slight increasing of electronics and samples. It’s like the brutal heaviness of their first two albums, combined with the multi-layered and atmospheric arrangement of their last two albums. This time they’ve created seven epic songs and also three short semi-acoustical instrumentals, which are playful intermezzos between the apocalyptic hurricanes. The music hits like a chunk of ashlar on all my limbs, organs and senses. It’s a fact that it’s Cult Of Luna’s fifth masterpiece."

Cult of Luna is back, sound as distinct as ever. Progressing with the slumber of doom, Cult of Luna projects its metal down the opposite path typical of the genre. These guys are slow, utterly slow. The doom-paced, uber-atmospheric instrumentals are spare yet lush somehow with melodicism. The ponderous drift brings you eventually to deep, death growls completing the dark audio picture. Cult of Luna puts the doom in doom, crawling like a metal snail, but one that will e...

Just fucking speechless. Cult of Luna promised a lot with their debut but never this much. This is possibly the densest thing I've ever heard. Of course names like Neurosis and Isis will be bandied about, but as much as I loved Oceanic this is just loads wider, deeper and darker.

Label: Back on Black   Origin: UK
Limited edition with black splatter on white vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Vertikal is a lesson in rock aesthetics; one that wisely fluctuates between the fluid, escapist ambient intervals reminiscent of Old Man Gloom’s ethereal electronic breaks and the solid, menacing outbursts that have made the godfathers of the genre (Neurosis, ça va sans dire) what they are today. The band took their time to record in their native (and noted) Umeå and this can be heard in the lo...
