"What you’re getting with all seven tracks is a near-crippling wall of distortion, riffs that plod menacingly (think of the town bully, drunk and surly, staggering home and scowling at anything in his way), and vocals that suggest Gollum, hooked on not only the Ring of Power, but also unfiltered cigarettes, cheap whiskey, heroin, crack, and crystal meth. Based on their name and sound, a comparison to Weedeater is inevitable. But while the two do share similar traits, Bongzilla lean more towards a sprawling sludge. Their songs find a groove and then get dragged away in the wake. Those who’ve discovered the band through Gateway will dig the hell out of this release, as will anyone jonesing for some seriously heavy sludge."

"These guys have paved a warm spot inside of my heart ever since I witnessed them a few years back. Their sound is heavy, driving, bluesy, hardcore... Much in the likes of Eyehategod, Sour Vein, Sleep, but different of course. The riffs totally chug along with heavy ease...lots of little time tempo changes, but plenty of grooves. Throw in the most blood shrilling vocals and about 20lbs. of hash."

Amerijuanican (CD)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
Includes a cover of Muddy Waters' "Champagne & Reefer". Again we’re treated to Bongzilla’s special blend of downtuned, groove-heavy sludge metal. And these eight songs fucking groove. It’s a rhythmic muck of heavy-ass riffs, impeccable drumming – check out some of the fills in the title track, for instance – and Dixie Dave’s distinctive bass lines.

Methods for Attaining Extreme Altitudes (Re-issue) (Picture Disc) (Vinyl LP)

Label: Hydro-Phonic   Origin: USA
Limited edition of only 150 picture disc copies. Methods for Attaining Extreme Altitudes is the work of a band who appear to be operating at the top of their game like Eyehategod, Grief or Cavity. Bongzilla grease the wheels with some bluesy, damn near catchy guitar riffs, fiddle with the tempos, then they burn the thing down.

Stash/Methods for Attaining Extreme Altitudes (CD)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
Stash was Bongzilla's debut full length after a rash of singles on smaller labels. Sludgy, grim, like Buzzoven covering Sleep. The Sabbath influence is apparent, as the riffs are full of bluesy undertones. Great lyrics about the state of drug legislation in the US and a crackpot rhythm section add to the appeal. Muleboy's vocals aren't for everyone, but in my opinion they work...he kind of reminds me of Kevin Sharp from Brutal Truth and it cuts through the mix.
