Yakuza Of Seismic Consequence (CD) (Import)
Label: Profound Lore Origin: Canada
Of Seismic Consequence is a considerable journey, with a feel more like a linear trip than a rounded album of songs. Conventionality has never been top priority for Yakuza, and their progressive bent toward the experimental and tech-jazzy continues here.

Yawning Man Pot Head (CD EP) (Import)
Label: Alone Origin: Spain
Featuring Alfredo Hernandez - drums (ex-Kyuss, ex-Queens of the Stone Age); Billy Cordel - bass and Gary Arce - guitars (The Sort of Quartet, Oddio Gasser). Until this past year, Yawning Man was one of those highly regarded but seldom-heard bands, the type that only those “in the know” are aware of. Put it this way - they’ve been covered by Kyuss and the groups that Mario Lalli (bass), Gary Arce (guitar), Alfredo Hernandez (drums) have been in reads like a laundry list ...

Year Long Disaster Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed (CD)
Label: Volcom Origin: USA
Of course, I don’t need to tell you that all good parties involve fist fights and fucking, so the end result is the same bloody fun mess. I just mean that YLD have dipped their big, groovy balls in gold dust and champagne, baby, and Black Magic smells and sounds like goddamn success. They’ve conjured up a big load of awesome trouble here by fusing the feral stomp of Raging Slab, the sparkling sweat of Urge Overkill, the gnarly demeanor of Sonny Barger, and the witchy w...

Year Long Disaster Self Titled (CD)
Label: Volcom Origin: USA
It's taken awhile, but Year Long Disaster, the band formed in rehab by son-of-a-Kink Daniel Davies and former Karma to Burn bassist Rich Mullins, has finally released a full-length. When they keep it simple and direct and rely on Mullins' Karma to Burn past, it's a killer record. This is what Karma to Burn's debut, the one with the last minute singer, should have sounded like. And for that alone, it gets my recommendation.

Yeti Volume, Obliteration, Transcendence (CD)
Label: Life is Abuse Origin: USA
With three of the songs over 10 minutes in length, there’s quite a bit of room for the trio to jump from one style to another. There’s conventional riffing and grooves on the album, but there’s not always a direct correlation between one section of a song and the next. It’s demanding music, the type that resists convention in spite of the traditional aspects to the compositions. You could say it’s a bit Mr. Bungle, a bit Iron Maiden, a bit Melvins, and a bit free-form...

Yob Atma (CD) (Import)
Label: Profound Lore Origin: Canada
Guest appearance by Scott Kelly (Neurosis). YOB have once again created another opus of doom metal mastery that will go down as one of the great American doom metal albums of our age (even though you can pretty much say that with any album within YOB’s repertoire). But with “Atma” the Eugene, Oregon three-piece, led by vocalist guitarist Mike Scheidt, have unleashed a new level of dynamics and depth with an album in which many will call the band’s magnum opus. Transce...

Yob Live at Roadburn 2010 (with Bonus DVD) (2CD) (Import)
Label: Roadburn Origin: Netherlands
Includes a bonus DVD of the performance. “We’re gonna play four songs and that will be one hour” says Yob mainman Mike Scheidt at the beginning of this Roadburn 2010 set, thus letting the audience know exactly what to expect – cosmic, sprawling psychedelic doom of the highest order (no pun intended). Yob are an intimidatingly dense enough proposition when recorded in a studio, and live they pull no punches and give no quarter. Yob are a well-oiled, fluid doom metal mac...

Yob The Great Cessation (CD) (Import)
Label: Profound Lore Origin: Canada
Doom is meant to be dour and slow, but here it's also furious. The riffs, the vocals, the deliberate, pummeling rhythm (courtesy of YOB alumni Travis Foster on drums and new bassist Aaron Reiseberg) – it seethes from start to finish, and as a statement of intent for The Great Cessation, you can't get any better.

Yob The Illusion of Motion (CD)
Label: Metal Blade Origin: USA
With The Illusion of Motion, YOB have combined the strengths of their past work into one of the better albums of 2004. From the slow build up of “Ball of Molten Lead” to the sprawling, epic title track, YOB take doom and claim it as their own. Singer/guitarist Mike S layers his voice over the kind of riffs you could drown in. Mike, Isamu Sato (bass), and Travis Foster (drums) make a wholly unique band, taking the intricate beauty of Isis and Neurosis and mergin...

Yob The Unreal Never Lived (CD)
Label: Metal Blade Origin: USA
How do you describe an album that starts with an explosion, ends with Gregorian chants, and has nothing but genius in between the two? That’s the only problem I have with The Unreal Never Lived, the fourth album from Portland, Oregon’s YOB. It’s left me speechless. While the basic DNA of YOB stays the same – epic, dense riffs, otherworldly vocals that can soar to Geddy Lee-like heights and then plummet to a death metal growl, a thunderous rhythm section – what ...

You Will Die Self Titled (CD)
Label: Hawthorne Street Origin: USA
Indianapolis-based trio You Will Die wheels out the instrumental magic on their frantic nine-track self-titled debut. Heavy and dark with a stoner rock edge, this group takes pieces of Keelhaul and Karma to Burn with a dash of The Fucking Champs and come out with a feral display of what goes down when three seasoned noise rock veterans ditch convention and mesh all of their wares together to make an explosive entity.

Zaphire Oktalogue Self Titled (CD) (Import)
Label: Nasoni Origin: Germany
Zaphire Oktalogue, 3 friends, between 15 and 20, mix up their different tastes and abilities to make their own incisive kind of progressive music. Playing for nearly a year, their music combines energetic Blues-Rock with pieces of overflowing Post Rock , drifty and danceable parts with huge atmospheric influences, crosses Weird Folk elements with a psychedelical 60s flair and has always an intensive sense for melodies and a dash of pop. On their debut album, they prese...

Zeke Flat Tracker (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Remastered and repackaged re-issue. Hailing from Seattle, the four-piece have reissued their first two albums, Flat Tracker and Super Sound Racing and, you know what, they’re still hellish nasty. They’re a middle-finger fuck you to the modern generation of rock fans and bands. They sound like Motorhead and MC5 on a cocktail of drugs that would send even hardened druggies to their grave.

Zeke Til the Livin End (CD)
Label: Relapse Origin: USA
Zeke have always been known for their tear-ass approach to hard rock music. On 'Til The Livin' End, they seem to be striving to reign in that speed a little bit and apply a little more song craft and sonic symmetry to their aural attack. The guitar tone is way more metal than it is punk, which is very appealing to someone like myself who digs that really deep rich overdriven amp tone. The vocals are of the barked/shouted variety, but with a nice tenor rasp. Th...

Zen The Sound of Shit Happening (CD) (Import)
Label: Muse Entity Origin: Sweden
Zen could have been straight out of the late 60's, early 70's with their classic sounding approach, beautiful harmonies and terrific psychedelic jaunts. For a three piece, these guys have soul and that seems to be a major aspect to how well they get their point across. These guys do produce a very classic sound complete with vintage gear and vintage recording production making it very real and very warm It sounds like a cross between Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Blue C...

Zodiak Sermons (CD)
Label: Translation Loss Origin: USA
Features members of Rosetta, Balboa, Slacks, and Javelina. Zodiak is a gathering of some Philadelphia's underground elite (and all representatives of Translation Loss in-house bands), featuring members from Rosetta, Balboa, Slacks, Javelina and ex-Lickengoldsky. Sermons is the by-product of some old-fashioned dicking around between kindred souls looking to jam away some idle time and reportedly the guys discovered there was more cohesion to this meddling around than any...

Zolle Self Titled (CD) (Import)
Label: Supernatural Cat Origin: Italy
Marcello (Morkobot) and Stefano, two self-professed farm boys from the fields of northern Italy, have taken a bit of a break from their many bands and projects to concentrate on a two-man riff-oriented entity they've dubbed Zolle (derived from the Italian word zòlla, meaning clump). For the past year, Marcello (guitars) and Stefano (drums/percussion) have worked tirelessly to create an instrumental album that not only encompasses many of the avant-garde principles lear...
