Habsyll
MMVIII (CD) (Import)

Label: PsycheDOOMelic   Origin: Austria
Calling “MMVIII"” doom metal would be a massive disservice to this record’s heaviness, despite a similar genetic lineage. This is the sound of a prophecy fulfilled, Habsyll come in thick oiled cords of feedback and bass. Like the desperately sluggish draining of fluids from a slab, Habsyll’s dying tones take up way more of the record than the band’s occasional playing of notes. It might cause your typical doomers a little disquiet, this record creepycrawls way beyond a...

Hackman
The New Normal (CD)

Label: Small Stone   Origin: USA
Features members of Milligram and Lamont. From Milligram and Lamont, comes Hackman, which replaces neither the hardcore meets metal rage of the former or the heavy shitkicker boogie stomp of the latter. Instead, guitarist/vocalist Darryl Shepard, bassist Jase Forney, and drummer Todd Bowman aim for the gut with a collection of, as they put it, “better riffs for better days.” What Hackman has to offer – great songwriting and even better playing (especially from Forney, ...

Hail!Hornet
Disperse the Curse (CD)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
Hail!Hornet is an all-star team of sludge. T-Roy Medlin fronts Sourvein, “Dixie” Dave Collins plays bass in Weedeater, Vince Burke plays guitar in Beaten Back to Pure, and Erik Larson drums for various bands, including Birds of Prey. But I prefer this side project. It’s a stronger beast. Too bad this record lacks printed lyrics, though the song titles say that the forecast is “miserable”. Thankfully, the music isn’t.

Label: Elektrohasch   Origin: Germany
Burden State is a true masterpiece between stoner, southern rock and dirty blues. Great riffs, catchy vocals and a killer production.

Hainloose
Rosula (CD) (Import)

Label: Elektrohasch   Origin: Germany
‘Rosula’ is tight as hell, with each song stripped of fat while at the same time rich in dynamics and memorable riffs, chased by Haris’ clean vocals. Overall, Hainloose not only reminds me of Kinch - with perhaps a bit Colour Haze at their most concise - but also of some of the best and cleanest of the Swedish scene, such as Astroqueen, Honcho, and even Mammoth Volume. As you might surmise, there’s lots of desert vibing, but there’s also a leavening of a difficult-to-d...

Half Makeshift
L'anse Amort (CD)

Label: 20 Buck Spin   Origin: USA
Includes four photographic postcards. Right from the start of L'anse Amort you'll notice the more rhythmic approach as well as more 'clothed' melodic ideas. The distorted harpsichord, the guitar chords, bells and atmospheric keyboards take us to the more romantic aspects of nordic metal without being metal (or nordic). More the stuff you'd find as intermezzo's on the classic black metal releases. After 10 minutes into "A Whale's Heart" a screeching, distorted - i...

Half Man
Red Herring (CD) (Import)

Label: Beard of Stars   Origin: Italy
I’ve seen a whole bunch of gigs over the last couple of years, but no matter how many gigs I’ve seen, the best one is still Half Man (at the DIST festival). No other band can combine blues, psychedelic and early 70’s style hard rock to that perfection (both live and on records)... there’s a few that comes close, but Half Man still takes the cake.

Hammers of Misfortune
Fields/Church of Broken Glass (2CD) (Import)

Label: Profound Lore   Origin: Canada
Hammers of Misfortune are very progressive. Sometimes it's crunchy and metallic, other times it's very retro sounding with '70s keyboards and a rock vibe. The songs with Quattro's female vocals sound even more old school, with an "Age of Aquarius" feel. Songs like "Butchertown" have an ominous and almost doomy vibe. Both Fields and Church of Broken Glass are dramatic, with lyrical and musical ebbs and flows that are theatrical at times. Of the two, I personally prefer ...

Harvey Milk
My Love is Higher Than Your Assessment of What My Love Could Be (CD)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment of What My Love Could Be taught me that you didn't need to always play fast to be heavy, that you didn't need to resort to clichés to convey emotions, and that you didn't need to follow any particular set of rules to write good music (like using a sledgehammer as a percussive instrument). What continues to impress me about the band is how well they use the negative space between the notes, how they can make a song as turgid as "F...

Harvey Milk
The Pleaser (CD)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
If My Love is Higher... turned my head away from the tried and true, 1997's The Pleaser proved that it was still possible to make an absolutely kick-ass rock 'n' roll album. Unlike My Love..., The Pleaser reissue has been remastered, and the added depth (mostly to the rhythm section, which has Kyle Spence replacing Trudeau on drums) and clarity drives home how insanely great songs like “Down,” “U.S. Force,” and “Rock 'n' Roll Party Tonite” are. No, not just great. Fun....

The Singles (Vinyl 2LP)

Label: Relapse   Origin: USA
Does not disappoint. I’d say it was more in line with My Love… and Courtesy and Goodwill, as the songs aren’t as out-there in terms of noise/insanity. Makes me think of a lumbering drunk, trying to stagger quietly in a house, axe in hand, but failing miserably. Essential for any Harvey Milk fan.

Dawn of Hawkwind (CD) (Import)

Label: Blueprint   Origin: UK
The painfully slow process of consolidating the myriad unannotated odds and ends that litter Hawkwind's catalog gets underway (chronologically, at least) with Dawn of Hawkwind, an excellent document of founder Dave Brock's own formative back pages. Several different phases of his pre-Hawkwind career are illustrated, with Brock's own voice-overs introducing each one. Opening in 1966, with a bunch of demos cut during his time with the Dharma Blues Band, the set pr...
