Ancestors - Invisible White (Color) (LP) Cover Art Ancestors - Invisible White (White) (LP)

White vinyl. Includes a download card.

The follow up to the groupís sophomore album Of Sound Mind, Invisible White marks the debut of new member Matt Barks on Moog / modular synthesizers and charts a new course for the bandís progressive, colorful sound. The songs on the album feature a hybrid of orchestral and electronic instruments and assume an almost cinematic, film score feel augmented by guest musicians playing violin and vibraphone. Simultaneously playing to the strengths of psychedelia, prog and even rhythm and blues, the music retains Ancestorsí exploratory approach and adds a hauntingly emotional impact, pushing the bandís sound into interstellar overdrive.

Bite the Bullet - Self Titled (Marbled) (IMPORT) (LP) Cover Art Bite the Bullet - Self Titled (Marbled) (IMPORT) (LP)

Limited edition of only 200 copies on marbled vinyl. Features members of Highway Child.

This duo from Copenhagen, formerly in the now disbanded classic rock group Highway Child, propagates guitar-driven vintage music that reaches further back than your usual Sabbath worshippers. Bite the Bullet strongly rely on songwriting principles and vibes established from the 1960s on, prominently by bands from the so-called British Invasion. What you get on their debut is Rhythm 'n' Blues in its earliest form alongside psychedelic tinges such as spaceship-keyboards and handclaps in the reverb-laden (as are most of the tracks) "Hit the Ground", tinkling piano parts as well as noisy feedbacks throughout, the latter never destroying the actual songs, which the two piece happens to write rather well. This EP is comprised of five of them, ranging from the aforementioned across the hammering "Space Drums" to the dreamy "I Will Not Die", appealing particularly to fans of White Stripes or, of course, Baby Woodrose.

If catchwords like garage, Mod and Fuzz are no strangers to you, give Bite the Bullet a listen, also because of the quite unique androgynous voice, making the nicely melodic closing tune "My Soul" the highlight of this initial calling card.

Boris - Smile (Japan) (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Boris - Smile (Japan) (IMPORT) (CD)

Amazing one of a kind packaging: yellow foam with a die-cut heart!

With Smile, the three-piece opts to focus more on their more rock-oriented side, keeping the the drone and doom of past releases to a minimum. Smile's a dense, thick album, and while the writing overall is more accessible than some of their past work, you could spend days trying to peel back all the layers. While the mainstream adulation oils the gears of the hype machine, the music's the engine. Smile may occasionally show the mileage of the band, but it's still running smoothly.

Be prepared for a Boris like no other. Takeshi, Wata, and Atsuo have created a meld of the drone and electronica.

If Wata isn't one of underground rock's most underrated guitarists, I don't know who is; she'll peel your face by layers with her off-the-radar strumming, sonic paintbrushes and wailing string tugs. Wata has a tendency at times to recreate ancient Shinto lines through amplified regurgitation, whereas mostly she simply crushes everything in her way through her Orange stack. Of course, Takeshi's no slouch himself on his two-pronged bass, which accounts for a large portion of Boris' thunder, Atsuo's blaster caster drumming notwithstanding. The thing with Smile is that it's so damned good you don't get everything on the first listen, so this will undoubtedly be locked on repeat in your player. Boris has done for underground sludge, doom and garage rock what their influences such as Blue Cheer and Atomic Rooster did subtly in the late sixties, which is to move the style forward and make a difference upon it while remaining pure.

Dead Pan Speakers - The Dead Pan Speakers (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Dead Pan Speakers - The Dead Pan Speakers (IMPORT) (CD)

Japanese psychedelic band influeneced heavily by Hawkwind.

When dealing with a previously unheard Japanese band, it’s always best to assume it’s going to be weird. Such is the case with The Dead Pan Speakers. Produced by Eternal Elysium, the eight songs on this self titled album leapfrog merrily through psychedelic rock (think Marble Sheep). Largely instrumental (vocals make an appearance on the last song, but that’s about it), the band weaves in and out of a sonic dreamscape. The Dead Pan Speakers is another pleasant surprise from Japan.
