Kadavar - Abra Kadavar (CD) Cover Art Kadavar - Abra Kadavar (CD)

Berlin trio Kadavar have worked quickly to become one of the most prominent acts in the European heavy underground. Their 2012 self-titled debut sounded so organic that even the mp3s had an analog hiss, and while they carried their songs across with an ultra-natural feel, it was the confidence in the material and the spontaneous feel of the performances that made Kadavarӳ Kadavar such a watershed release. Thus it is that their second album, Abra Kadavar, arrives with no small measure of anticipation.

The distinctive drum sound of Tigerӳ kit ֠the sort of fuzz that came off his snare with each tap ֠has abated, though the snare hits hardly sound punched in and an overall natural, live feel has been maintained between both the drums and Mammutӳ bass, which was a standout element of the first record and remains so on Abra Kadavar. As regards to Lindemannӳ vocals, they are forward in classic rock tradition, but more assured and mature for the bandӳ road time. Throughout, there is clear, resonant stylistic growth and as much as Abra Kadavar proves the first album wasnӴ a fluke, it also shows the three-piece arenӴ necessarily limited to the driving ѷ0s heavy rock that they nonetheless so effectively convey on the single, Ԅoomsday MachineԮ

The self-titled ended psychedelic and extended with the eight-minute Ԑurple Sage,Ԡbut though theyӲe shorter, the closing trio of Ԍiquid Dream,ԠԒhythm for Endless MindsԠand ԁbra KadabraԠshow a nascent sonic diversity in Kadavarӳ approach that incorporates rocking organ, psych swirl, and a heavy jamming sensibility that underlies much of the bandӳ work to-date, but has yet to be so blatantly expressed. TheyӶe not at all loosened their grip on their aesthetic, but these songs are neither as raw as their predecessors on the self-titled nor as geared toward a single idea. If that record established Kadavar and announced their arrival, then Abra Kadavar is confirmation of their prowess and a signal that thereӳ more to them than analog worship and thick grooves. One of several factors it shares in common with Kadavarӳ preceding outing, however, is that Abra Kadavar is still loaded with potential for what this band might be able to accomplish.

Kadavar - Berlin (CD) Cover Art Kadavar - Berlin (CD)

CD-edition in digipack.

The third full-length from the awesome German stoner/psych rock overlords! Though recorded live in the studio on the band's own analog gear again, its distinctly audible that this time round the record turned out even deeper as far as songwriting and arrangements are concerned - and that Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann (guitar/vocals), Christoph "Tiger" Bartelt (drums) and new bass player Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup (formerly of The Oath and Aqua Nebula Oscillator) have spent more time on the recordings than ever before. Tracks like 'Filthy Illusion' and 'See The World With Your Own Eyes' knock your socks off with their boisterous energy. 'The Old Man' and 'Last Living Dinosaur' deliver post-modern madness at its finest. Also includes the epically mystic cover version of 'Reich Der Trume' by German songstress Nico.

Kalamata - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Kalamata - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD)

The debut-album by this three-piece from Germany offers instrumental high energy stoner-psych-space rock as its best. Reminding of early Kyuss, Hawkwind and Motorpsycho, the heavy guitar, a fuzzy bass and killer drums create songs from beyond reality. It's a trip and it's a joy for the ears!

Kalas - Self Titled (CD) Cover Art Kalas - Self Titled (CD)

Features Matt Pike (High on Fire, Sleep).

Prior to hearing their self titled debut, having Matt Pike (High on Fire, Sleep) sing for Kalas struck me as akin to hiring a master chef to build a deck on your house. But then I heard it, and while there’s still no getting around the fact that he will always be known as “Matt Pike, Kick Ass Guitarist” and not “Matt Pike, Vocalist Extraordinaire,” he does an admirable job. His gravely, throaty roar is more expressive than on the High on Fire albums, matching the moody and epic feel to songs. There’s a quiet, grim intensity to Kalas’ strain of metal, even when the band is at its loudest and fastest. With two guitarists, there’s more room for melody that makes for some stellar guitar playing. Kalas’ debut is nine songs of brooding war metal, thunderous and solemn, and well worth your time.

Karma to Burn - Almost Heathen (CD) Cover Art Karma to Burn - Almost Heathen (CD)

Includes the bonus unreleased instrumental demos (part 2 of 2) from their debut album.

Karma to Burn's new album Almost Heathen is a welcome addition to this man's collection. Riffs that touch your spine in all those dirty ways. I saw this killer trio twice before the release of this album and many times proir to that. They have never disappointed. Instrumental rock that never gets boring and grooves you even if you don't want to.

I think it's safe to say this album rocks at least as hard, if not much harder than anything that's come out this year so far. They seemed to of given the songs more room to build and breathe a little this time out(most of the songs are over 5 minutes), which makes the main riffs sound even heavier than before. Some really triumphant shit going on here as well.

'Arch Stanton' sees Karma To Burn at a crossroads in their career. Where do they go from here? They have pretty much ruled the instrumental stoner metal scene since they reformed back in 2009 and here's another smokin' hot record to prove it! This is their third album since then and sixth overall.
