Kal-El - Astrodoomeda (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Kal-El - Astrodoomeda (IMPORT) (CD)

Kal-El is the fuzzed-out step-child of hard rock and heavy metal, often with hints of pyschedelic and blues rock as well as doom metal. Songs typically feature a bass-heavy groove, detuned guitars and mind-expanding lyrics. Formed in Norway back in 2012 by members from Theatre of Tragedy, Six Eyes Lost and Desspo, they started rehearsing for the debut record shortly after that, growing up not just as a band, but as a little family as they found themselves around Norway on different gigs and venues. The album "Pakal" was released on Wormhole Death Records 26th of May 2014, second album "Ecosphere" was released on Setalight Records 22nd of August 2015. Kal-El are now ready with "Astrodoomeda". Be prepared for a stunning blend of Black Sabbath meet Monster Magnet meet Nebula!

Kalamata - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD) Cover Art Kalamata - Self Titled (IMPORT) (CD)

The debut-album by this three-piece from Germany offers instrumental high energy stoner-psych-space rock as its best. Reminding of early Kyuss, Hawkwind and Motorpsycho, the heavy guitar, a fuzzy bass and killer drums create songs from beyond reality. It's a trip and it's a joy for the ears!

Kalas - Self Titled (CD) Cover Art Kalas - Self Titled (CD)

Features Matt Pike (High on Fire, Sleep).

Prior to hearing their self titled debut, having Matt Pike (High on Fire, Sleep) sing for Kalas struck me as akin to hiring a master chef to build a deck on your house. But then I heard it, and while there’s still no getting around the fact that he will always be known as “Matt Pike, Kick Ass Guitarist” and not “Matt Pike, Vocalist Extraordinaire,” he does an admirable job. His gravely, throaty roar is more expressive than on the High on Fire albums, matching the moody and epic feel to songs. There’s a quiet, grim intensity to Kalas’ strain of metal, even when the band is at its loudest and fastest. With two guitarists, there’s more room for melody that makes for some stellar guitar playing. Kalas’ debut is nine songs of brooding war metal, thunderous and solemn, and well worth your time.

Karma to Burn - Almost Heathen (CD) Cover Art Karma to Burn - Almost Heathen (CD)

Includes the bonus unreleased instrumental demos (part 2 of 2) from their debut album.

Karma to Burn's new album Almost Heathen is a welcome addition to this man's collection. Riffs that touch your spine in all those dirty ways. I saw this killer trio twice before the release of this album and many times proir to that. They have never disappointed. Instrumental rock that never gets boring and grooves you even if you don't want to.

I think it's safe to say this album rocks at least as hard, if not much harder than anything that's come out this year so far. They seemed to of given the songs more room to build and breathe a little this time out(most of the songs are over 5 minutes), which makes the main riffs sound even heavier than before. Some really triumphant shit going on here as well.

Karma to Burn - Wild, Wonderful Purgatory (CD) Cover Art Karma to Burn - Wild, Wonderful Purgatory (CD)

Includes the bonus unreleased instrumental demos (part 1 of 2) from their debut album.

The fact that they almost managed to secure for themselves the vocalising services of ex-Kyuss man John Garcia will tell you an awful lot of what you need to know about Karma to Burn. Like Kyuss, the game here is bad-vibed, juggernaut grooves underspinned by a seismic, rumbling bass.

All in all I dig it and is recommended to anyone who is fan of The Almighty Riff. Traditional rock songs in an nontraditional form. Anyone who needs a chorus to keep themselves anchored to a song probably will not dig this.

Keelhaul - Keelhaul's Triumphant Return to Obscurity (CD) Cover Art Keelhaul - Keelhaul's Triumphant Return to Obscurity (CD)

For those new to Keelhaul, my best explanation is to take the sludgy technicality and phenomenal drumming of earlier Mastodon, pair it with the dorky dexterity and skronky anxiety of Dysrhythmia or Don Caballero, and then best recognize that this comparison embraces both style and quality. For those who might be hesitant to return the love to these guys who left you all those years ago, leaving you feeling heartbroken and empty inside, the best I can tell you is that last year I was surprised that two reunion albums, Cynic’s Traced in Air and Dystopia’s self-titled, ended up high on my year-end top list. Being as brilliantly complex as the former and as gritty and grimey as the latter, I will be shocked if any other album surpasses Triumphant Return to Obscurity this year.
